  • Indoor Tanning is 'Widespread' Among Young Women While Cancer Rates Rise

    by Alexandra Samuel

photo: Hans Nelemanphoto: Hans NelemanI'll admit it: In my younger days, I may have hit up the tanning booth a few times before prom or to get a "base tan" for Spring Break. (At least that's how we justified it.) But since I've become a health writer and learned just how dangerous indoor tanning is, I wouldn't dream of getting back in a bed. Apparently, though, lots of people still do. A new study published today in the JAMA Internal Medicine reveals that indoor tanning is widespread among white female high schoolers and young adults, with many girls going at least 10 times a year. What's up with that, ladies?

Before this study, estimates of how many young women were actually using tanning booths and beds were limited, at best. So researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at questionnaires from high school students and young adults ages 18 to 34, across the country, from 2010 and 2011.

  • How to Eat Chipotle Guilt Free

by Sarah-Jane Bedwell; additional reporting by Alexis Joseph

photo: Beth Galtonphoto: Beth GaltonIf we're being totally honest, America's favorite burrito joint is pretty much the healthiest fast food around. Chipotle prides itself on providing its customers with sustainably raised food that tastes great and offers plenty of nutrition at a heck of a value. From sourcing local and organic produce to using meat from animals raised without antibiotics or hormones, Chipotle delivers food with integrity -- and is always honest with their customers. Recent news has suggested that due to low meat supply, the chain is considering allowing suppliers to sell animals that were treated with antibiotics "when necessary." In a statement, Chipotle CEO Steve Ells said, "Many experts, including some of our ranchers, believe that animals should be allowed to be treated if they are ill and remain in the herd. We are certainly willing to consider this change, but we are continuing to evaluate what's best for our customers, our suppliers and

  • Uh Oh! Frequent Facebook Use Can Make You Sad

    by Amanda MacMillan

Our good friend Facebook: It helps us stay connected, share cute pics of our pets, and can even help us get healthy -- but it doesn't necessarily make us feel happier, according to new research from the University of Michigan. In fact, frequent use of the social network may predict a decline in a person's well-being, the study found, which appears today in the journal PLoS ONE.

Researchers recruited 82 young adults and texted them at random times over a two-week period, asking them questions like: How do you feel right now? How worried / lonely are you? How much have you used Facebook since the last time we asked? How much have you interacted with real people? And overall, they found that the more people used Facebook during one time period, the worse they subsequently felt.

Those who used Facebook the most also tended to rate their overall life satisfaction the lowest. Alternatively, interacting with people

The Pretty Little Liars actress showed off her toned body by rocking a trendy midriff-baring look from Houghton's Resort 2014 collection.
