  • Academy Awards: What 10 of This Year’s Nominees Wore to Their First Oscars

    Joanna Robinson

It's the first Academy Awards for many of this year's nominees, and as the saying goes, you never forget your first. From newcomers like 12 Years A Slave's Lupita Nyong'o, to veterans like Nebraska's June Squibb, the red carpet is going to be packed with performers trotting out their first Oscar gown or tux. That's a lot of pressure. Years from now, when those Oscar freshmen have become veterans, we'll look back at these first steps they took. What were they wearing? What were they thinking? Who were they dating? How nervous did they look? Sarah Jessica Parker recently spoke to us about her first, DIY red carpet Oscar experience and fondly recalled her date back in 1989.

"I found a local dressmaker [in Pittsburgh] to make me a dress for the Oscars. And I guarantee you I wore a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes. And I did my own hair and makeup. [...] I went with a young man named Robert Downey Jr., because we were courting at the time, and I'm sure I have the dress. It

  • What Words Are Used Most Frequently in Oscar Acceptance Speeches?

The frontrunners in this year's acting races-Matthew McConaughey, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto, and Lupita Nyong'o-have each given consistently entertaining and eloquent speeches this season. (Blanchett's joke about McConaughey's Neptune reference during the SAGs perhaps being the high point.) As we wait to see what speeches are in store for us Sunday night, we thought it would be a good time to take a look back at acceptance speeches of yore.

We collected transcripts of all the acceptance speeches given by winners in the best-actor and best-actress categories, and created word clouds, which-indicated by the relative size of the words-represent how frequently they were uttered by the pool of winners. Small words ("and," "the," etc.) were discarded; we also discounted acceptance speeches that were given by someone else on behalf of the victor. Once we had produced word clouds representing all the speeches for the two categories, we decided to additionally make ones with

Just who are those unrecognizable Oscar audience members sandwiched between the stars this Sunday? Technical category nominees, for starters. Also, the close friends and family members of the celebrities, and seat fillers-the unsung heroes of each Academy Awards, whose job it is to make sure that not a single Dolby Theatre seat is left open when actors and actresses excuse themselves from the three-hour awards show for the bar or loo. (The responsibility is even more nerve-wracking considering that all of the literal seat-jumping and aisle-sprinting is completed in formal wear.) To get a better understanding of the behind-the-scenes responsibilities of these glammed-up Oscar gophers, we tracked down a seat-filler from last year's Seth MacFarlane-hosted ceremony. She agreed to tell us all about the application process, job peculiarities, and celebrity elbow-rubbing potential in exchange for anonymity.

As we approach Hollywood's golden night on March 2, it's only natural to look back on Academy Awards of yore-the winners, the upsets, and, most importantly, the fashion. Who could forget Grace Kelly's enviable turn in a mint green Edith Head dress at the 1955 Oscars, when she won best actress for The Country Girl, or Elizabeth Taylor in a demure, pale yellow and floral Christian Dior gown at the 1961 Academy Awards? Certainly, these grand dames knew a thing or two about making an entrance. But their modern-day counterparts are equally exciting. America's sweetheart Julia Roberts wowed in vintage Valentino when she won best actress for Erin Brockovich, and more recently, Gwyneth Paltrow showed off her minimalist side with a white caped Tom Ford. Clearly, the most memorable best-dressed stars are those who make a statement on the red carpet. Click through the slide show for more of the all-time best Oscar looks.

When Prince William attended the BAFTAs a few weeks ago, it was a major moment. British royalty had collided with Hollywood, and our heads nearly exploded. It reminded us of when Princess Diana cut a rug with John Travolta at the White House in 1985, and we longed for Kate Middleton to have an equally dashing moment.

So what better opportunity than this Sunday's Oscars? Couldn't you just imagine Kate being entranced by Matthew McConaughey's Southern twang or talking models with Leonardo DiCaprio? Certainly, the princess would have plenty to talk about with Cate Blanchett, but what would she wear?

James Middleton and Donna AirJames Middleton and Donna AirFriends of James Middleton-little brother of Kate-are actively denying rumors that he is going through a rocky patch with his older television-presenter girlfriend. Now, sources close to Newcastle-born Donna Air, 34, who is in Los Angeles on a pre-Oscars holiday, tell me the pretty blond is telling anyone who will listen how happy the lovebirds are together.

"Donna found all the split rumors funny. She's happily with James, and they're very much still a couple," says my mole. "They've been staying in, avoiding the nights out, and trying to be super healthy ahead of the summer. James is very focused on work, and they have both agreed they can't handle being hungover with their busy lives."

Bring your bell-bottoms to the church and cue up Earth, Wind, and Fire on the 8-track for the reception-That 70's Show veterans Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher are gettin' hitched. They haven't set a date or even made an official announcement-for all we know, they haven't even filled in Topher Grace and Laura Prepon yet-but E! is "exclusively" confirming the news, and points to a paparazzi photo of Mila sporting a giant diamond on "that finger."

You know, that finger that, the moment it's grazed by a stone worth 3 months of an average salary, instantly weds you for life to your mate. You didn't learn about that one in finishing school? Kunis and Kutcher, who went on to such successful movie careers after their shared time on television that it feels weird to even call them That 70's Show stars, have been dating for about two years.

  • Kate Middleton and Prince William Turn to Agency to Find Nanny for Prince George

Readers of Royal Watch will have known for some time that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are on the hunt for a full-time royal nanny to help take care of Prince George. As the couple's forthcoming tour of Australia and New Zealand approaches, the Daily Mail reports today that the couple have turned to a posh U.K. agency, Nannies of St James, to try and find a nanny for Prince George.

I reported last month that the couple's current help-Jessie Webb-who looked after Prince William when he was a boy, has come to the end of her contract. The 71-year-old matronly Jessie, who has white hair and a way with infants, understandably wants to put her feet up, and only came out of retirement last summer as a favor to Prince William.

Now the couple are said to be "desperately" seeking a replacement, as they need someone to accompany them to Australia and New Zealand in April. Although Kate is said to be keen for

  • George Clooney Took His New Girlfriend on a Date to the White House

    Josh Duboff

George ClooneyGeorge ClooneyGenerally, George Clooney's relationships follow a similar trajectory: Clooney and the Woman in Question begin dating, marked by an inset on an Us Weekly cover ("George's New Love!"), and then in a flash-within weeks, seemingly-she is escorting him down red carpets and vacationing with him at Lake Como; finally, about two years later, they part ways. But Clooney's new, somewhat mysterious (we'll get to why momentarily) relationship with British lawyer Amal Alamuddin is bucking all previous George Clooney Relationship tradition.

Clooney and Alamuddin were first spotted together back in October on a dinner date in London, after which they "shared a cab" (which is like the bat signal for tabloid editors). Outlets quickly dug up a dossier on the 36-year-old Alamuddin: she represents Julian Assange; she topped a "London's Hottest Barristers" list in 2013; and she's Oxford- and NYU-educated. (All of which is to say: aside from the "strikingly gorgeous" part, she is somewhat
