  • 7 DIY Beauty Recipes for the Thrifty Gal

    By Rebecca Taras, Refinery29

Fall is one of the most beautiful seasons of the year, but what happens to our skin, hair, and nails as a result of the weather change is not so glorious. Between chilly temps and whipping winds, it becomes increasingly difficult for a girl to retain shiny tresses and a glowing complexion. But, instead of investing your hard-earned cash on a new collection of products, we suggest you make your own - thrifty-girl style.

To help you out, Kelly Ryan O'Brien and Jill Badlotto of Chicago Blogger Network told us about seven amazing beauty bloggers who were willing to share their favorite homemade recipes for getting gorg on a dime. Not only are these DIY formulas easy to prepare, they're all natural, too. See ya later, drugstore products. Looks like Mother Nature just stepped in to save the day.

  • Curli- Cute ! 4 DIY Braided 'Dos

    By Barbara Herman, Refinery29

Despite the easy volume and natural va-va-voom drama, curly-haired girls often complain that they're left out when it comes to styling ideas. And, while stuffing curls into a bun or choke-holding them into a tight braid is a no-brainer, there are some stunning plaits that make curls more manageable (while still letting them bounce and breathe). To prove it, we enlisted the help of hair guru Bethany Brill to come up with four genius braided 'dos to play up all that beautiful texture.

"Sometimes, tight braids can make straight-haired girls look like they have no hair, but with curls, all the texture helps pump up the braid, making it look full and voluminous," says Brill. Not that Yasmin Daguilh, our model for this story, needs any convincing. "I've had my hair straightened before, but it wasn't for me. My curly hair makes me stand out," she says. If you, too, are ready to let your ringlets get all the fanfare they so rightly deserve, this tutorial will

  • The Scary Truth About Sleeping Pills

    By Lex Berko, Refinery29 Refinery29

We've all had sleepless nights - lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, wondering why our brains keep chugging along even as the clock strikes four in the morning. The answer is probably different for everyone: too much caffeine, an onslaught of anxiety, bodily discomfort. But a fidgety night here and there is normal.

However, over the past few decades, either our insomnia has increased dramatically or our tolerance for it has precipitously dropped - because we're taking more sleeping pills than ever before. Between 2002 and 2008, there was a 70% increase in prescriptions from an industry that brings in over $2 billion a year. So what's going on: Who isn't sleeping well and who is turning to pills? As it turns out, the answer in both cases is more women than men.

    Who Uses Them?

According to a nationwide survey administered between 2005 and 2010, five percent of women versus three percent of men reported using pills to assist them in sleeping.

  • In Defense of Kim Kardashian

    By Seija Rankin, Refinery29

.There's something I have to get off my chest. While most of the world is watching the spectacle that is Kimye, thinking awful thoughts and poking pins into their Kim and Kanye voodoo dolls, I am eating it up. And, it's not because I'm a sucker for grandeur or have some sort of fantasy about a baseball-stadium proposal where I'm presented with an engagement ring worth the GDP of Bhutan. It's because I, Seija Rankin, love Kim Kardashian. In fact, I love the whole Kardashian klan, but my true affection belongs to Kim. It's shameful. It's dishonorable. My family probably wants to disown me (not my dad, though, because unless it's on NPR, he hasn't heard of it), but it's the truth.

Let me start out by addressing the obvious. I completely understand why a person would dislike Kardashian, and why you're probably all crafting angry comments now and maybe even starting a petition to have me fired. So, I should mention that I totally get it. Kim, and the rest of

  • A 3-Step Chicken Dish to Get You Out of Your Poultry Rut, Once & for All

    By Erin Phraner, Refinery29

.We're always looking for a quick and tasty improvement on the everyday chicken dinner - we all know how easy it is to get stuck in that poultry rut. And, that's exactly why we're excited for this super-savory recipe, which jazzes up a simply prepared chicken cutlet with a delicious tomato-caper dressing.

    Chicken With Tomato-Caper Dressing
Mix up the tomato-caper dressing when you have a free minute, then store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. We spooned it over chicken tenders, which we lightly dusted with flour before pan cooking for a little crust. But, feel free to get creative! This simple condiment (grape tomatoes, capers, shallot, olives, and parsley) is also tasty over steak, pork chops, salmon, and even scrambled eggs.

    Serves: Four

    1 small shallot, minced
1 small clove garlic, pressed or grated
    2 cups halved grape tomatoes
    1/2 cup chopped kalamata olives
    4 tablespoons

  • 16 Under-$50 Holiday Beauty Gifts to Buy Now

    By Megan McIntyre, Refinery29

We realize it's not even Halloween yet and the concept of holiday shopping seems about as alien as Miley Cyrus suddenly deciding she wants to be a nun. But, there are some sanity-saving benefits to starting this annual rigmarole early, mainly, preventing you from having a grade-A holiday meltdown on December 15 when you realize you have bought exactly zero presents. Not to mention the fact that the early bird gets the best beauty loot.

Holiday beauty gifts have started arriving in stores earlier, so instead of fighting it, why not embrace it? We're in no hurry to speed up the arrival of frigid winter temps either, but if starting now means we can avoid panic shopping in mid-December, then count us in. Plus, it's a whole lot easier to find time to shop when you're not also juggling an insane holiday-party schedule.

Starting to see the benefits of avoiding present-buying procrastination? Welcome to the club. Ahead, we've gathered the coolest,

  • The Vampire Cleanse is Real — & I Lived Through It

    By Vanessa Golembewski, Refinery29

.Earlier this month, I met Connie Britton. She was kind enough to let me interview her, so I went in armed with need-to-ask questions. What's your secret for glowing skin? Any Nashville spoilers you can offer? But, admittedly, I snuck in a totally selfish one, too: "What advice would you give someone going on a juice cleanse for the first time?" Sure, this is something our readers care about, but mainly I was interested because a) Britton's a champion juice cleanser come awards season and b) I was about to embark on one myself - called the Blood Cleanse. (Yes, that's a real thing.) Her counseling turned out to be invaluable.

The Blood Cleanse is a collaboration between Joulebody Cleanse, Gilt City, and the new CW show The Originals, which follows the trials and tribulations of a vampire-werewolf hybrid clan every Tuesday at 8 p.m. It lasts three days, with five juices per day (Five! Five juices! Ah, ah, ah, ahhh!).

    I have high expectations

  • Rad or Bad: The Robot Manicure

    By Megan McIntyre, Refinery29

.Have you ever looked at a metallic nail polish and wished it was just a bit more...metallic? Don't get us wrong, we love gilded gold and silver sparkle lacquer as much as the next girl, but our ultimate mani would be one that had the luxe, gorgeous gleam of our favorite gold cuff. We've tried a menagerie of metallic polishes over the years and none were able to provide the super-shiny, reflective hues we craved. Until now, that is.

Jewelry designer Odile Tull has taken her metal craft into the land of nail accents with a collection of press-on nails made of 18K gold, sterling silver, and gold-plated brass. She even created gemstone nails studded with cubic zirconia or (baller!) diamonds. This is quite literally nail jewelry, and we think we're in love.

While we clearly dig the effect, we can't say we're equally as smitten with the prices: Each nail (singular, people) ranges from $55 to $70 for the base metals, $400 for the CZ, and the
