  • What It's Really like to Be Single

    By Connie Wang, Refinery29

When it comes to talking about dating, singledom is basically only ever framed in one way: It sucks. There are countless columns, blogs, and articles dedicated to helping single women hack the system, deal with unsavory suitors, and combat the stigmas and stereotyping that the coupled world rains down. Positivity comes in the form of "happy ending" stories; in every article we read about a lonely person learning something from the dating scene, a match of some kind presents itself at the end. "If you follow this advice," the stories seem to say, "you won't have to end up single, either!"

And yet, today, 50% of people in the United States are single, and it's silly to think that all of them feel cynicism about not being in a relationship. If we've learned anything a lifetime of conversations spurred by The Rules, it's that there are no rules when it comes to seeking out love.

So, in an effort to transcend that conversation, we turned to six single

  • Do You Need a Dating Rotation?

    Refinery29By Caitlin Thornton, Refinery29

They're all in the Notes section of my phone: the 26-year-old graphic designer from Baltimore. The surfboard shaper with a motorcycle. A couple of actor/bartenders who live within a five-mile radius of my place in Central Los Angeles. The 37-year-old who works at an ad agency, has a sweet pit-bull, and an enviable vinyl collection - but is so obviously not over his ex-fiancée.

I was fresh out of a relationship, breakup wounds still searing. But, rather than stay single, I figured out what the hell I wanted from my next long-term partner, dove straight into dating, and found myself in the middle of a rotation - that is, seeing a multitude of men, all noncommittally.

My many relationships have fallen somewhere between a string of not-so-great first dates and being in love. I've enjoyed the fun aspects of being with a partner without being tied down to one person emotionally. And, since I don't have a top-notch memory, it also requires keeping a handy Read More »from Do You Need a Dating Rotation?
  • 5 Winter Health Horrors — & Their All-Natural Solutions

    By Maggie Puniewska, Refinery29

For those who haven't spent much time in colder climes, winter may have taken on a few misleading qualities. The cute, chunky, wool sweaters and evenings spent sipping hot chocolate following an afternoon sled ride only exist in films like A Christmas Story. Winter (at least for this writer) is more like a hell-frozen-over death trap, involving virus particles and the fact that even four layers of the most thermal leggings won't produce a warming effect in the frozen tundra that is the outdoors.

Yes, a wee bitter over here. Because even if you're super careful about maintaining a relatively healthy lifestyle, winter is bound to grace you with some sort of ailment, whether it's picking up a runny nose from a cube mate or packing on a few extra pounds through some post holiday boozing and bingeing. Fortunately, staying healthy and treating the most common cold weather inconveniences doesn't have to involve a shopping spree at the pharmacy - some of

  • 7 Food Chemicals You Should Know About

    By Vanessa Golembewski, Refinery29

    .

There was some real shock value behind the whole azodicarbonamide-in-Subway's-bread thing. In case you missed it, that chemical's also used in the manufacturing of yoga mats and sneaker soles. Turns out, it's also available in Hearty Italian. Yum. Now that Subway has agreed to remove the chemical from its breads, we're wondering what other chemicals could be lurking in foods we eat every day.

A cursory glance at Subway's other bread ingredients, for example, reveals a wealth of words we straight up cannot pronounce. You'll see things like ammonium sulfate, DATEM, sodium stearoyl lactylate, potassium iodate, and calcium sulfate. Okay, we can pronounce that last one, but it still seems kind of ominous. So, are these chemicals as strange as they sound?

RELATED: The Dirty Truth About Calories

They sure are. And, Subway isn't the only food chain carrying 'em. In fact, there's an entire collection of chemicals in many restaurants' food that

You win, cold snap. For the past several days, we've dealt with snow flurries, slush lakes, and icy winds so cold, we were running to Fashion Week shows because we were freezing - not because we were late. So, of course, the shoes we chose to slip into this time around had to fulfill a few more requirements than just "fab."

With sneakers, heavy-duty booties, and shearling-lined stunners dominating the concrete, there were a few intrepid souls soles out there who decided to flash a little toe, some ankle, and, in a few cases, a full-on summery, bare leg. Ahead, we're showcasing the steppers that carried NYFW attendees through the snow drifts, over the ice, and around the puddles. From the pretty-yet-practical to the delightfully impractical, these were the shoes that turned the pavement into the real runway this season. Walk. It. Out.
