• Source: How Your Car Helps You Lose Weight

Driving can definitely cause weight gain. If you're bored on long work commutes or road trips, snacking or hitting the drive-through can make the time pass. And sitting in traffic all the time doesn't quite burn calories the way running does. It doesn't have to be this way! Here's how your car can actually help you slim down.

    • Sip on this: Keep a reusable water bottle in your cup holder so you can sip it when you feel like snacking.
    • Stash healthy snacks: Forget McDonalds! Stash nonperishable healthy snacks in your car so you can reach for those instead of hitting the gas station mini-mart. Nuts, trail mix, granola bars, whole grain pretzels, and shelf-stable soy or almond milk are great options. If you know you'll be in the car for a few hours, pack a healthy meal so you can avoid having to hit the drive-through. Eating every few hours keeps hunger at bay and can prevent overeating at mealtimes.
    • Extra kicks: You never know when

From the dips that go well with pita to those that play up their own flavors, we love to graze on these finger-lickin' tasty snacks! The problem with dips, though, is that they are mindless munchies. Want to gain weight? These tips help you do so in a healthy way.Want to gain weight? These tips help you do so in a healthy way.Not all women are looking to lose weight-some actually want to add a few pounds. But not just any pounds, they typically mean they want to gain lean muscle. And just as with weight loss, weight gain comes down to caloric intake versus caloric output. There are other factors that can help, however, so that you put on muscle in the healthiest and most efficient way.

When you're in the gym working out, you are breaking down your muscles (i.e. putting stress on them); out of the gym they recover and grow via diet, sleep, and hydration. Here's your two-part plan to maximize muscle growth.

    Inside the Gym

    1. Do strength exercises that are compound muscle movements.
In other words, do moves that utilize multiple muscles and multiple joints at the same time. These recruit and break down more muscle fibers so that in recovery phase, more are building and growing than if you were to do just isolated muscle moves. Exercises include squats, lunges,

  • Most of us don’t anticipate saving a life when we head off to work each morning, but one Detroit mail carrier did just that when he prevented a woman’s house from burning down.

More on Yahoo Shine: Rescued Pit Bull Saves 4-Year-Old's Life

On Tuesday, postal worker Darrian Crutcher, 48, was making the rounds on his usual 10:30 a.m. route, when he noticed smoke billowing from the upstairs window of a home on Stansbury Street. “There was a young girl, around 12 years old, sitting on the front steps crying,” Crutcher tells Yahoo Shine. “She said her mother was inside the house, so I called 911." The dispatcher told Crutcher to make sure everyone was out of the home—and without a thought to his own safety, he walked inside and found the homeowner, Carolyn Patterson. “She was standing in the living room panicking, so I asked if she had a hose,” he says.

Shake Weights, heavily advertised on TV, have entered the public consciousness enough to have been parodied on "South Park" and "Saturday Night Live," among other venues. While the jokesters mock the (admittedly easy-to-mock) ads, science marches on, asking the fundamental question: Do they work as advertised?

Not really, according to research published in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine.

Shake Weights contain weights at the ends attached to the handle by a spring. According to the manufacturer, shaking the weights stimulates sufficient muscular activity to reduce fat and increase muscle mass in the upper-body areas targeted. For this study, 25 young adults did three exercises that are part of the prescribed Shake Weights routine--chest shake, biceps shake and triceps shake--using Shake Weights and conventional dumbbells.

  • ,,Every morning millions of us turn to the coffee maker before our significant other or our children. Coffee is the fuel that turns us from tired, angry monsters into fully functioning human beings. Coffee is like a cup of magic.

There are lots of people who choose to cut out coffee in order to reduce their caffeine intake. If they do not like they way they feel on caffeine, then I commend them for making the switch. However, since science has long praised the health benefits of drinking coffee in moderation, and frankly I don't know that I could function without it, I will not ever be one of those people who can cut out their morning cup of Joe.

Whether it is a dire need or has a placebo effect, I consider it my duty to drink coffee every morning. Not just to function coherently but also because of its health and antioxidant properties. Coffee consumption has been found to reduce the risk of certain types of cancers, including endometrial cancer, prostate cancer, head and neck

  • mood related to state you live in mood related to state you live in I grew up in Maryland, a pretty neutral state in the grand scheme of themes. When I headed a couple states south for college, a clear divide between Northerners and Southerners became apparent. Thinking it was just a stereotype that Southerners were friendly, I was shocked when my first day on campus somebody held the dorm door open for me when I was a good 20 yards away. Southern gentlemen truly did exist. On the opposing side, anybody slightly loud or abrasive was automatically dubbed a Northerner. A stereotype for sure, but about 99% of the time it was an accurate assumption.

So why is it so easy to tell where somebody is from based on how they act? Apparently it isn't all fabricated stereotypes - people's personalities really do reflect where they live. Or really, where they live reflects their personality.

You know the old saying "opposites attract"? Not so much when it comes to where you live. Instead, the "like attract likes" phrase of the science world seems to be more

  • Will wearing high heels damage my feet?By: Darria Long Gillespie, MD

I'm a slave to fashion - if 5-inch heels are trending, I'm there! But wearing heels can be painful and I wonder if I'm doing permanent damage to my feet. Am I stuck with flats?

My patient was wearing fantastic shoes. Tan heels, with a little platform to give her extra height.
Of course, she hadn't come to see me to discuss foot fashion - she'd come because she'd fallen, twisting her ankle. It was what you'd call a fashion casualty. Don't worry - today's blog is not about how you shouldn't wear your favorite heels - it's about how to wear them safely and comfortably. As beautiful as these shoes are, the consequences can be ugly! Here are some of the more common injuries I see in the ER causing foot pain.

Have a health question for Dr. Darria? Ask it here!

Sprained ankle: Watch the height of the platform and heel (as well as heel width) or you could end up with a sprained ankle. Ideally the heel should be no more than 2 inches high if you're

Yandy.comYandy.com While putting your Halloween costume together this year--whether or not it's something like this sexy pineapple (to round out a sexy fruit salad group costume, of course)--keep these dos and don'ts in mind. Because, yes, even Halloween costumes can be health-ified!

    DO:
    * Take that mask home from the store and scrub it with rubbing alcohol. After all, other shoppers have already tried that sucker on plenty of times--and researchers have found that they end up teeming with bacteria as a result (ew).

    * Have some sort of reflective material on your costume if you're going to be wandering outside in the dark--taking kids out trick-or-treating or bar-hopping with friends.

    * Use luminescent zinc sulfide if you're going to use glow-in-the-dark makeup. This is the only kind of glow-in-the-dark cosmetic approved by the FDA (for limited use).
