  • You may have been a tech-pro, pre-baby, but at the speed technology goes, the following apps may have slipped past you between feedings. This is going to date me, but before I had children, cell phones were simply, phones. Now, as I am sure you know these gadgets do all sorts of nifty things -- things that can actually help a new mom, or experienced mom, handle the daily demands of life.

Before adding anything more onto your plate though, be sure the apps deliver what they promise and are worth the trouble. Like anything in your life with baby, the possibilities need to pass the mommy test.

    Test Questions

    Will it wake the baby?

No, the Silent Light Phone Ring Sensor is a great addition to your ever-present cell phone. This prevents both loud ring tones and the insane buzzing a vibrating phone can create when it is jammed between your thigh and the cover of a magazine. The subtle blue light will keep your baby in dreamland while you decide whether or not to answer t...Read More »

  • Does your preschooler bring home enough weekly artwork to wallpaper the house? Do your youngsters have a sunburn from the frequent camera flash that captures all the cute moments? You know that you need to organize photos and artwork. The box you are using right now is crammed, and there is not enough room for more. So how do you go about organizing the would-be clutter and preserving precious memories?

    Identify Clutter Locations

Are they in a shoebox? Do you pin them -- three deep -- to a cork-board? Is every free place in your home cluttered with picture frames? Enough already! Gather your photo clutter. Go ahead, dig up the boxes, bring out the bags and do not stop until you find the hidden folders of junior's artwork.

Tip: If you have too many picture frames displayed in your home, take all photos out of the frames. Add them to the clutter (for now).

    Sort the Find

Sort your photos by subject or arrange them chronologically. Make distinct piles. Store each pile in a

Makayla Hayes, 14, won the international grand prize in the 2011 National Geographic Kids photo contest for this …

Kids have an interesting perspective on just about everything, and when you hand a kid a camera you can get a glimpse into her world. This year's winners in the Fifth Annual National Geographic Kids International Photo Contest captured humorous quips, quirky sights, and poignant moments that may be impossible to see without a view finder.

Judges sifted through more than 12,000 images submitted by kids in the United States and Canada, Bulgaria, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, Lithuania, Slovenia, South Africa, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Winners were chosen from each region, but the international grand prize went to 14-year-old Makayla Hayes of Marion, Illinois, for her eerie underwater self-portrait.

We've pulled together a slideshow (above) of the top shots from this year's contest; you can check out the 2010 winners and 2009 winners at National Geographic Kids.
