    Refinery29By Gabrielle Korn, Refinery29

Make no mistake: When it comes to beauty, we love a good bargain. Sure, we're not above spending an embarrassing amount of money on something sparkly, but if there's a cheaper, comparable option, we're not going to turn it down.

But, in terms of the quality that comes with a high price, there was one product in particular that we were unsure about: our hair dryer. Do we need to be spending hundreds on our dryers, or will a drugstore option do? And, why in the world do these tools get so pricey?

According to hairstylist Kristen Keller, there actually is a difference between a high-end blowdryer and a drugstore version - and that difference could mean big things for your hair health. "Most of the drugstore blowdryers come with high heat and very little power, which means you're actually taking longer to dry your hair," she says. The longer you expose your hair to that

A girl in high heelsWe can probably all agree that the only downside to buying new shoes is needing to break them in. Whether they're stilettos or ballet flats, every new pair of shoes that joins our closets needs to be worn for a few weeks before they're completely comfortable. The worst part of breaking new shoes in is the inevitable blisters that come along with that, but we're determined to prevent blisters - and to help you prevent them, too. Read the tips below to have the least pain possible when you're wearing new shoes!

Break in your shoes: New shoes are the biggest cause of blisters, and especially if they're shoes that aren't meant to be worn with socks. If your new shoes are a little bit too tight, try this trick: Blow dry a pair of socks for about two minutes before you put them on. Once they're hot, put on the socks, then put on your shoes and walk around your house for a bit. The heat will help to warm up the shoes and

Girl applying night creamOne of the terms you hear thrown about constantly in the beauty world is Retinol. That term, along with other forms of the noun - retinoid, Retin-A, etc. - are a popular and highly-effective component of most night creams, smoothing the skin's surface and preventing signs of aging on the skin. "But, I'm so young, I don't need to think about that yet," you say to yourself. Well, actually, that's not true: NOW is when you should start using a night cream, when you're young and cute and nothing's freaking out on you.

  • While at the Mad Men premiere, January Jones did something so very unlike her character Betty Draper Francis, a gal who clings to her perfectly placed blonde bob and minimalistic cosmetics routine like none other. What did the actress (who recently admitted she's sort of a prankster) do? She rocked this twisted French braid-with blue top eyeliner and a gold shimmer lower lash line, we might add.

    January Jones

What's really cool about this pretty springtime braid is that it's actually three-in-one. A trio of braiding techniques was used to achieve the undone and twisted design that so intricately shows off and exposes her dark roots (there is major beauty envy going on right now). Wella Professional Celebrity Stylist Ambassador, Andy lecompte started off with a French braid, adding in rope braids and completing the look by braiding the three together to create one.

Want to try it at home? You'll need a few elastics, a clean head of hair, and a straightener. Remember, it's meant to be a

  • Is Lip Balm Addiction Real?

Addicted to that soft lip feeling? The Scientist: Marc Glashofer, M.D., a dermatologist and skin cancer surgeon practicing in New York and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American College of Mohs Surgery.

The Answer: Technically, there is no way you can get a physiological addiction to lip balm, like you can to a drug. But the ingredients in your favorite chapped-lip-stick could be making your poor pout worse.

Generally, lip balms are petrolatum-based, or contain lanolin, wax or silicone that work to seal in your lips, helping them retain their natural moisture while also making them feel smoother. No problem there. Some also throw in extra ingredients, such as fragrances, preservatives, phenol, menthol and camphor. The latter three give that tingly sensation that it's really doing something . Well, it might be doing something counterproductive. While some people deal fine with these ingredients, other people get a negative reaction, contact

Kate Mara is the latest star to go heavy metal with her makeup, opting for gorgeously gold lids at the premiere of Transcendence. While striking, the look is a subtle way to give the lustrous trend a try, and is still sophisticated enough for any occasion. Can't wait to score the same look? We got the scoop from her makeup artist just in time for the weekend.

After perfecting Mara's luminous complexion, Coleen Campbell-Olwell swept on the gold metallic shadows, using a purple accent along the lower lash line for a pretty pop of color. As for those lush lashes, "I decided to forgo false lashes and instead lined her top lash line with Antonym's Certified Natural Eye Pencil in Noir ($18; antonymcosmetics.com)," she tells us. "To add density to her lashes, I took a small, dense shadow brush and smudged it in." Finally, a dusting of Orlane's Highlight Care Brush ($45;orlane.com) was applied on the inside corner of her eyes for added shimmer.

We've been breathlessly awaiting Proenza Schouler's debut makeup line since MAC announced the collaboration in October, and finally the collection is here!
