Best Kids Books for Potty Training

While the thought of potty training fills me - a mom of a two year old - with dread, I want my child to have positive associations with it, viewing potty training as a major step and accomplishment on the road to becoming a big kid. One great way to motivate your child and help them form positive associations with potty training is to introduce kids books that talk to them, on their level, about this intriguing new subject. Here are five of the best kids books for potty training:

1. My Big Boy Potty by Joanna Cole. The best parts of this book, though numerous, include the engaging illustrations, simple explanations, and how the author makes it easy for your child to relate to the main character, Michael.

2. My Big Girl Potty by Joanna Cole. Also making the list of best potty training books for kids is Cole's alternate version of this book, a perfect fit for little girls learning to use the potty, who get to follow along as the main character, Ashley, earns her big girl underpants.

3. Potty by Leslie Patricelli. This is an excellent book for toddlers as a first introduction to the potty and what it's for. The book's short and easy-to-understand language with colorful pictures make the potty training message easy for even very young kids to grasp.

4. Princess of the Potty- Little Steps for Big Kids by Nora Gaydos. With helpful messages that parents will love (like remembering to wash your hands), this book describes in a fun way how unappealing wet, smelly diapers are, and how wonderful fresh, clean underpants are.

5. Even Firefighters Go To the Potty by Wendy Wax. This engaging lift-the-flap book is perfect for the little boy who needs a bit of convincing that using the potty is the big-boy thing to do, using typical boy heroes as inspiration.

6. Princess Potty by Samantha Berger. For little girls that are super into princesses, pink, purple and all things feminine, this book is their potty training best friend. With an included tiara and jewel stickers for motivation, this book will inspire even the most reluctant little princess to sit on the potty.

Learning to use the potty can be scary and intimidating for toddlers. But introducing the concept of potty training through fun, colorful, helpful kids books can make this big transition a little bit easier, and plenty more appealing to young kids.
