How to Make Lingerie Work for You

Dita Von Teese's first job was working in a lingerie store when she was 15 years old. Little did she know the experience would shape her future career. The burlesque dancer and model now has a lingerie line of her own, and she's encouraging women everywhere to embrace the glam.

"I've always been attracted to the era of the '30s, '40s, '50s, because it was a moment of glamour and self-creation," she says, though her vintage look has humble roots. Dita grew up as a natural blonde in a small farming town in Michigan. "I'm an ordinary-looking girl underneath all the tricks, so I loved this idea of giving myself my own big Hollywood makeover."

According to Dita, lingerie is less about sex and more about creative expression. "My relationship with lingerie is really about self-expression and reveling in being a woman and having little moments of luxury and glamour in my everyday life," she explains. "The way that you feel, it radiates."

What are the first steps to finding lingerie that works for you? "The best thing is to find a great salesperson that can fit you," she explains. "There are so many great ways to cover up our flaws and enhance our different body shapes."

Dita also says a thong is an essential part of a lingerie collection. "You have to have a thong in your wardrobe," she says. And yes, it's possible to find one that's comfortable. "You look at what the edges are like; sometimes sleeker is better. If you're concerned about finding a comfortable one, look for something a little more simple."
