Taryn Manning: 'In Hollywood, I'm Considered Ugly'

From "8 Mile" to "Hustle & Flow" to "Orange Is the New Black," Taryn Manning has played her fair share of characters who are down on their luck. The actress says that no matter how sweet or girl-next-door she tries to be, she ends up playing characters who are "layered" or a bit rough around the edges.

"Sometimes I think it has something to do with my past," Taryn says of being cast in colorful roles. "I guess you can just read it on my face that I've been through some s---. In Hollywood standards, I'm ugly. That is my stereotype."

Taryn says one of her favorite roles has been her current one: playing Pennsatucky, the backwoods born-again Christian meth head whom Piper meets in prison in "Orange Is the New Black." "She has a lot going on," Taryn says of the dynamic character. "And it comes from whatever happened to her way before she even got into prison."

Taryn says her "OITNB" cast is like family, and the many talented women on the show enjoy spending time with each other. "If you walked onto our set on a day that all the girls are there, it sounds like a Jonas Brothers concert," she says. "It's a very happy environment to be around."
