Kefir is a yogurt drink popular in the Middle East that's starting to gain esteem in the United States. A source of calcium, protein, and phosphorus, kefir was found to help people to stay thinner longer in a study described in a 2011 New England Journal of Medicine article.

Craving carbs? Mira and Jayson suggest baking with coconut flour. "It's lower in carbohydrates than regular wheat flour," Mira says. "And it has something called lauric acid, which is great for raising the good cholesterol."

Mira and Jayson recommend cooking with MCT oil in place of other oils. Jayson says it's "popular with high-performance athletes but has never really made it into the kitchen." The oil causes a thermogenic effect that raises metabolism. "It's a fat that burns fat," he explains.

If you enjoy fish, you might want to double-check what kind of salmon you're eating. "Wild-caught salmon has a lot more micronutrients," Mira explains. "It has 500 percent more vitamin D and omega-3 than farmed salmon."
