The Health Symptoms Too Many Young Men Ignore

For most guys in their 20s and 30s, health concerns might seem like something in the far distant future. But gastroenterologist Dr. Roshini Raj says that young men should be aware of symptoms and behaviors that could indicate or lead to serious medical issues.

Some health symptoms might seem commonplace but really need to be checked out, including acid reflux and heartburn. "So many people get heartburn every day," she says. "They don't think it's a big deal, but they could be causing significant damage to their esophagus, and in some cases esophageal cancer. Don't just ignore it."

Dr. Raj emphasizes that younger men often think they are invincible and participate in a lot of risky behaviors, which can cause health problems. The biggest concern? "STDs," she said, explaining that some men might not be practicing safe sex. "Get screened if you've had any high-risk behavior."

In addition to STD screenings, other important tests that all young guys should have done, said Raj, are a blood pressure check, a cholesterol screening, and a testicular exam.

Having a beer gut or a potbelly can also be a cause for concern. "Studies have shown that abdominal obesity -- that's belly fat -- is an independent predictor of heart disease," Raj says. "Overall obesity is bad for you; abdominal obesity is even worse."
