Blind Man Regains Sight, and the First Thing He Does is Write a Love Note to His Wife

Alden Hultunen's love note to his wife was simple. "I love you Glenda," read his message, written on the back of a piece of paper. It was the first love note he wrote to her in over a decade, and writing it was one of the first things he did when he regained his sight after years of blindness.

Alden is nearly 80 years old and lives in Aura, MI. When he was in his 50s, he was diagnosed with dry macular degeneration, which causes the central part of the retina to wear out. He slowly lost his vision over the past 25 years.

Alden has almost 30 grandchildren, and the last grandchild he remembers being able to see is now 22 years old. He hasn't been able to read for over 10 years, and could only sign his name until recently, when an unbelievable surgery gave him his vision back.

Two months ago, Alden had a telescopic lens implanted in one of his eyes, making him the second person in all of Michigan to have the surgery. He refers to his eye as "bionic man eye" since it looks like a silver crystal.

The surgery lasts a little over an hour and is not painful. Though Alden's eyesight won't be perfect, it allows him to recognizes facial details, read signs... and write messages to loved ones, like the one Alden's grandson Kyle shared on Reddit.

"My Grandma was so excited to read the love note from my grandpa," Kyle tells the Good News. "She cried when she read it and said that everything they have gone through for my papa to see again has been worth it."

Every two weeks, Alden has to travel 500 miles to the Kellogg Eye Center in Ann Arbor to get his eyes examined as part of his occupational therapy. "He is noticing improvement every couple of weeks, and in about 12 weeks he will be able to see, read and write with ease," Kyle tells us. "I am excited for my grandpa to see me for the first time."
