Good News – These Mannequins Are Designed like Actual Human Women!
Clothes shopping can be a soul-crushing experience if your size isn't in the single digits, but one British department store is trying to make the average-size woman feel good about their bodies while looking for something stylish to wear.
Debenhams, a popular department store in the UK, is the first mainstream retailer to use size 16 (US size 14) mannequins in its stores. These mannequins, which will be in all 170 Debenhams stores in the UK, reflects the size of an average human woman, while the typical size of a mannequin used in other stores in the UK is a size 10 (US size 8).
This is the latest step the retailer has made in rejecting unrealistic expectations of women. Earlier this year, they placed a ban on retouched lingerie shots of models in their catalogs and advertisements, and urged other stores to follow suit. They also unveiled a new diversity campaign using models with a range of shapes, sizes, ages, races and body types - including two women who are amputees.
We hope Debenhams' positive work in promoting healthy body acceptance will encourage more women to shop there - and give other stores a nudge in changing the way they do business.
