Little Girl and Her Teddy Bear Reunited by Hero Cop

A lost stuffed animal doesn't typically require police involvement, but Sgt. Jason Cullum of the Evansville Police Department knows that it can be pretty traumatic for a little kid. That's why he went out of his way to reunite an 8-year-old with her missing teddy bear.

Cullum was driving in his police cruiser when he saw an object in the middle of the road. Upon further inspection, he discovered it was a teddy bear that had flown from a car in front of him.

He knew this bear wasn't trash, but a child's beloved friend. "I have a couple kids myself and I know how important those teddy bears are to them," he told WEHT News. "We carry teddy bears in our car that we can give to kids if we're dealing with them," he adds.

Cullum was able to reach the family's car and return the bear to its owner, third grader Nikki Mayo. The family was in the process of moving, and many of Nikki's belongings - including her bear, named Chocolate - were in the trailer in the back.

Nikki has had Chocolate since she was four years old, and after being reunited with her bear by this kind police officer, she'll have him for much, much longer.

"In law enforcement, we don't get thanked a lot for the things we do, and when you get a thank you from a child like that you know it was heartfelt," he says. "Her reaching out and saying thank you to me has really meant the world to me, and I really appreciate it."

"We know the importance a teddy bear plays in society. They save the world sometimes," he says. "On that day, the teddy bear needed saving."
