Movie Studio Gives Filmmaker $25,000 for Promotion, He Spends it All to Change the World
Filmmaker Casey Neistat is given $25,000 by 21st Century Fox to promote the studio's upcoming film "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," by doing something to support their campaign "live your dreams." The idea is to motivate, inspire and encourage people to do something they've never done before. Accordingly, Casey flies to the Philippines and uses every last penny to help victims of the recent typhoon.
Here's how it went down.
After telling the movie studio he was using their money for charity, three days later, Casey and his friend Oscar find themselves overseas.
Casey turns to Twitter to look for a contact in the area.
Shortly after, he's connected with someone's coworker.
With his team, Casey heads to a local warehouse store and purchases as much relief supplies as will fit into two of these buses.
The team drives for a really long time, as long as it takes to get to the remote village of Tacloban (about seven hours).
They enter a place of complete destitution. Trash fills the streets; homes function without electricity; people sit on the street begging for food and water; children play in ruin; cats and dogs run astray.
After making friends with the locals, Casey & Co. recruit a few people to help unload the buses.
Casey's team and their accomplices spend the night dividing and packaging the goods, creating 1,000 bags of relief supplies.
At daybreak, they deliver the bags to people through Tacloban. They are able to provide 10,000 meals, tools for 35 villages, and basic medicine for local organizations.
They leave at sunset.
That's how Casey lived his dream.
