Make-Ahead French Toast Your Holiday Guests Will "Louvre"

The perfect holiday breakfast for family and guests!
The perfect holiday breakfast for family and guests!

Laughter, conversation, and the sweet smells of baking - who doesn't love the holidays? To make my life easier and avoid the stress, I try to prepare meals in advance for the large number of people I have to feed. Dinners are easy because everyone helps out, but I don't want to be stuck in the kitchen all by myself before breakfast. That's when I rely on this easy recipe for Overnight French Toast. With a few simple steps the night before, I'm free to enjoy my coffee and free time before the house wakes up!

Ingredients

1 tablespoon softened butter
1 large brioche loaf (French bread can be substituted)
8 eggs
1 1/2 cups whole milk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup light brown sugar
Powdered sugar
Maple syrup

Directions

1. Grease a 9"x"13"x2" baking dish with the softened butter.

2. With a knife, slice the brioche into 1-inch thick slices. Lay the slices, overlapping each other, in the baking dish.

3. In a large bowl, mix to combine eggs, milk, vanilla, nutmeg, and salt. Pour over the brioche slices. Evenly sprinkle the brown sugar over the top of the bread. Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator overnight.

4. When ready to bake, remove the plastic wrap and allow to rest on the counter for at least 10 minutes while preheating the oven. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until slightly golden and the batter has cooked through. If the bread starts to toast and become too brown during cooking, cover it with foil at anytime.

5. Dust with powdered sugar. Serve it by the slice or spoon it out like a casserole or bread pudding. Serve with maple syrup.
