3 Chic New Ways To Wear Velvet

By Tracey Lomrantz, Glamour magazine

Velvet is such a hot trend for fall that stars have been rocking it since all the way back in August. Here at Slaves To Fashion, we waited to bust out the smooth stuff until it felt a bit more weather appropriate, and now that it does, we've got three chic ways to wear the super-luxe material (including a smart way to expand on Lauren's fabulous velvet shoe choices!).

You already know velvet is a holiday party staple, but those rich-looking pieces don't have to languish in the back of your closet when you're not in champagne-quaffing mode. Here's how to do it in your everyday life.

Slip into a pair of velvet pants
: The mossy green version from Ralph Lauren's fall 2010 runway may be a bit balloon-y for your tastes, but the styling principles are spot-on. Choose a pair in a muted hue and pair 'em with a black sweater and blazer (or a capelet!), and simple neutral accessories. Don't want to drown in a sea of LBDs at your next cocktail fete? These are dressy enough to fit in but sassy enough to stand out...Check them out here.

Be totally touchable in black
: Who says the slenderizing hue has to be boring? You already know the secret to keeping things fresh while wearing black is to mix up your textures, and there's no better time for that than late fall. Start with a staple like a black velvet blazer, layer it over a wool sweater and a leather skirt, and add some lacy textured tights to the mix. The more rich fabrics you have going on in one outfit, the better (as long as they're all black!). This look is perfect for a weekend afternoon of shopping...Check them out here.

Try a little touch here and there
: Still feeling intimidated by the prospect of wearing velvet? Then accessories are your best bet--jazz up a pencil skirt and crisp white blouse with a pair of velvet stilettos (check out some of the chic pairs Lauren showed us this morning); add a little something-something to jeans and a T-shirt with a velvet clutch; or simply cinch the waist of your favorite shift dress with a belt made of the incredibly rich fabric...Check them out here.

What do you ladies think of the luxe velvet look for fall? Have you already invested in some pieces? Which of these outfit ideas is your favorite? Discuss!
