Anne Hathaway's Dress Apology—It's Not What You Think

On Tuesday, Best Supporting Actress winner Anne Hathaway, 30,  told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement that she was very sorry for wearing the pale pink Prada gown to the Academy Awards on Sunday instead of the Valentino gown she had intended to wear—and it was all because of a sneaky move made by Amanda Seyfried.

"It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans. Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself. I deeply regret any disappointment caused."

Valentino, a long-time friend of Hathaway's who custom-designed her wedding gown had expected the actress to wear one of his designs to the Oscars (where she won her first Academy Award). His company even sent out a press release on Sunday announcing that Hathaway would be wearing a "pink embroidered tulle illusion gown."

According to US Weekly, Hathaway made the switch because her "Les Miserables" costar Amanda Seyfried was planning to wear an Alexander McQueen gown that was too similar to the Valentino frock. A "source" said that Hathaway asked Seyfried, "What are you wearing? Can you send me a picture of it?" After Seyfried allegedly sent a photo, Hathaway made a speedy wardrobe change into that controversial pink gown.

Here's a photo of a Valentino couture gown from Spring 2013 that's very similar to the one Seyfried wore on Sunday. It may have been the one Hathaway was supposed to wear—and ironically, also doesn't require a bra.
