Secrets Celebs Know to Look Great in Photos

BFAnyc.comBFAnyc.comBilly Farrell, of Billy Farrell Agency, fashion's resident go-to photographer, has a knack for making the ladies look great. While his subjects are inherently chic, he's got a few tricks up his sleeve for nailing the perfect shot. Here, he shares his personal tips on how to look great in a photo.

What do you look for in a great photo?

Emotion. Any kind really. Whatever the subject. A mountain or a lady. Happiness, sadness, sexuality or surprise. Who wants to look at a photo that's devoid of some sort of emotion?

What's the most flattering pose?

It really does depend on the girl or guy and what they're wearing. For women, I usually try and get a straight-on shot head to toe and I may ask that she cross one foot in front of the other depending on her outfit.

What light should you try to stand in?

Anything that's not making you squint is fine enough. The photographer should know where to put you. Taking a little direction can pay off.

Group shot or single shot?

Group shots of 3 people or less is most desirable, both posed and chatting. Leave it up to the photographer to pull you out for a solo.

What are the best and worst colors to wear?

If you're looking to get the photographer's attention, you may want to stay away from wearing all black.

Any looks to avoid?

BFAnyc.comBFAnyc.comMost flattering silhouettes? Most unflattering?

I think like most men, I am attracted to curves. Accentuate your hips, your bust (without being vulgar), your calves, your butt or even the small of your back and neck. Choose one aspect of your body and show it off tastefully, subtly.

What hair doesn't read well and what does?

I love a long side braid-not so into a gals with mohawks.

Bold eye or bold lip?

Either, but not both.

Smile or vamp?

Both are appropriate...but should reflect the mood you are in. Like I said before, it's about emotion. If you're feeling happy: smile. Feeling sexy: vamp. Don't fake it. If your dog just died, don't go to the party.

Who in the fashion set does it best?

Off the top of my head, Taylor Tomasi Hill (pictured) always has great style and is always a pleasure to encounter.

Any other insider tips?

Have fun. Meet people. Don't be scared to start a conversation with a stranger. You only live once.
