16 Non-Lame Halloween Costumes

Can you believe it's October already? I'm still in denial a bit (although this awesome list was a bit of a wakeup call), but I have decided to get a jump on my Halloween costume. Most other years I wait until the last minute, and then I'm stuck strapping on some fairy wings or painting whiskers on my face in a quick attempt to look like I dressed up.

Well not this year, people! This year I'm picking a costume from this list and doing it up right. No more thrown together getups or people asking "so ... what are you?" Man, I hate that question, don't you?

Are you stuck for costume ideas too? Check out this list, although if you're planning to attend the same Halloween party as me (you know who you are!), please don't pick this one -- I don't need a twin, thankyouverymuch. The full list is here, or you can see a few of my faves below:

Betty White

She's been absolutely everywhere this year, and you're sure to get some laughs if you show up dressed as this "Golden Girl." Make sure to memorize some classic lines to spout out during the night. And for tips to make yourself look 88 (a must for this costume), check out this makeup guide.

Neytiri from "Avatar"

It was the biggest movie, uh, ever, so it's a pretty safe bet that everyone will know who you are. But instead of buying one of those lame costumes from the store, see how you can DIY it here.

Joan Jett from "The Runaways"

Want to look sexy without resorting to fishnets and a skirt that doesn't quite cover your butt? Well look no further than this rocker. With her take-no-prisoners attitude and way-hot makeup (see how to do it here), you'll be turning heads and stealing guys away from all of those sexy nurses/maids/gargoyles/whatever.

Queen of Hearts from "Alice in Wonderland"

Looking for something a little more quirky/creepy? This is it. Pick up a royalty-worthy dress and steal this step-by-step makeup guide for a show-stopping costume. Don't stress, it's actually a lot easier than this picture would have you think.

20s Flapper

Whether you're newly obsessed with HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" or you just love a fringed dress, this is a classic and fun costume. To perfect your Jazz-era look, check out these tips.
