There's no doubt red played the headlining role on the carpet. Everyone from Host, Anne Hathaway to Best Actress Nominee Jennifer Lawrence and last year's Best Actress Winner Sandra Bullock turned up the heat in this color.

Best Actress Nominee for Winter's Bone, Jennifer Lawrence in a simple Calvin Klein

Last year's Best Actress Winner, Sandra Bullock in a corseted Vera Wang

New mom Penelope Cruz came out to support her guy Javier Bardem in L'Wren Scott

Going nude…

Stars continued to show their love for the "nude" trend which was all over the red carpet this award season. It's a soft feminine look that works beautifully on almost every skin tone.

Halle Berry wore a nude Marchesa gown with a tulle train

True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld looked like a modern day princess in her age appropriate custom Marchesa gown. Kudos to the young actress for her fashion choices this awards season.

Mandy Moore also looked soft and beautiful in her elegant Monique Lhuillier gown

If all else fails, go with white…

The red carpet always has it's "white moments" and the Oscar's carpet was no exception.

Best Actress Nominee Michelle Williams wowed in Chanel Haute Couture

Best Actress Nominee Nicole Kidman wore a white Dior Haute Couture gown with crystal detailing

Reese Witherspoon color blocked with a little white and a lot of black in a retro chic Giorgio Armani Privé and matching retro updo

Minimalist and Metallic…

The minimalist trend was huge for fall and we saw a lot of it at the Golden Globes this year, the same goes for the metallic trend. Both Celine Dion and Gwyneth Paltrow carried on the torch.

All shades of Purple…

A pleasant surprise of the night was the many shades of the color purple on the carpet. From lilac to plum, there were so many beautiful dresses that spanned the spectrum of this gorgeous color.

One of the front runners of the night was Mila Kunis in a lavender, lace Elie Saab Couture gown

Cate Blanchett shows off her unpredictable yet always fitting sense of style in a lilac Givenchy Haute Couture gown with beaded accents and a pleated skirt

Finally! Natalie Portman looked absolutely beautiful in this violet Rodarte off the shoulder gown. Sometimes it pays to stick with what you know works and her collaboration with the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte always works. The dress flows beautifully and compliments the pregnant star's current physique. Her retro curls finish off her look perfectly.

Scarlett Johansson goes with the trends in lace and one of the night's hottest colors

Other notables…

Hilary Swank in a feathered and sequined Gucci Première gown with an ombré train

Best Supprting Actress Nominee Amy Adams in a cap sleeved, sequined L'Wren Scott and Emerald Cartier Jewels. The jewelry set would have been better suited for another dress. The color unfortunately clashes with her dress and the necklace doesn't work with her dress' neckline either. Elegantly cut diamond drop earrings would have made the perfect accessories here.
