3 Expert Tips on How to Sell Your Clothes Online (for when You Get to Spring-Cleaning of Your Closet)

If you're a practitioner of reselling your clothes--a good way to clear out some space in your wardrobe and make a few extra bucks--you might already be familiar with San Francisco-based thredUP. The online women's and children's resale site is a destination to shop women's and children's clothing and accessories at up to 70 percent off. And this week, thredUp launched X Collection, which features more than 6,000 pieces from over 200 contemporary designer brands, like Marc by Marc Jacobs, Elizabeth & James, and Diane von Furstenberg.


But the interesting thing for you all interested in selling your gently used designer items--thredUP will pay out 80 percent of the resale value, compared with the usual 60 percent. Incentive to finally start that spring-cleaning? Maybe. But first, you want to make sure you do it right. So we asked the company's senior director of merchandising, Kristy Atkins, to give us her advice on how to optimize your resale experience. Her top three tips:

Don't be dirty: "It's imperative that your items are clean and in like-new condition, so they feel special and new to the person buying them."

Stay on trend and seasonal: "Your clothing will also sell faster and for more money if it's on trend and appropriate for the current season. The sundresses you're not excited about wearing this summer are perfect to sell now, but you should hold off on selling your winter coat until the fall if you have the storage space for it."

Nice photos and product detail are imperative: "To help sell your items quickly on thredUP and ensure the buyer is happy with her purchase, we take a minimum of two quality photos for every item (front and back view for clothing) and share details on the material. It can be hard to tell the difference between fabrics like silk, polyester, or rayon in a photo, but you certainly can in person!"
