At last year's Academy Awards, Chanel celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee changed Anne Hathaway's lipstick "three times in about five minutes" because of last-minute wardrobe decisions (you may have heard a little something about that). But amidst the lipstick and wardrobe chaos, Hathaway took home the award for best supporting actress. This year, needless to say, was a little less frenzied (for both ladies). "Her stylist sent me a picture of the dress a few days before, so I had an idea of what we were doing," says Lee. "The vibe was very relaxed, because she had to just show up and give someone else an award." We spoke with Lee to get all the details on Hathaway's gorgeous makeup look, but especially how to get those killer brows.

Skin. Lee prepped Hathaway's skin with Chanel Hydra Beauty Serum and Creme. "It's like a drink of water," Lee says. She let both sink in while Hathaway had her hair done, before applying Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet in Beige Rose 22 (out this month). "For years everyone has been into dewy skin, but I'm leaning more toward a velvety finish," says Lee. "Using something with a little more powder in it means you don't have to apply even more powder, and it diffuses the light beautifully."

Brows. Is it wrong that we'd rather have Hathaway's eyebrows than a ticket to next year's Oscars (or maybe even an Oscar)? "I am fastidious with eyebrows, and actually, they're a little thinner than I like them to be," says Lee. She used an espresso-brown eyebrow pencil to fill in any gaps, brushed them into shape with a small brow brush, and then set them with Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel. "I knew that her hair was going to be styled back, so this was their moment to shine."

Cheeks. To bring a "healthy flush" to Hathaway's complexion and sculpt out her cheekbones ever so slightly, Lee started with a cream blush (Le Blush Creme de Chanel in Cheeky, available in May). "You don't need a strong line under the cheekbone in order to get sculpting," says Lee. "You really only need to go under the apple of the cheek." She finished with a dusting of a powder blush "because I wanted to make sure that her rosiness stayed all night."

Eyes. "This look is all about her eyebrows, eyelashes, and her lips," says Lee. "When I want people to focus on her eyelashes, I keep the eyelid rather blank." Skipping eyeliner entirely (Lee is "over" cat-eyes at the moment), she opted instead for a pale creamy matte shadow over the entire lid, and a lilac-gray shadow in the just the creases for the illusion of a deeper natural socket. She curled her lashes, applied Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir, and began applying individual false lashes with a black lash glue. To bind Hathaway's natural and faux lashes seamlessly together, she curled them one last time with a heated lash curler.

Lips.
Trying to find something as close to Hathaway's lip color, Lee chose Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in La Caline, a "purple-y pink." She applied the lipstick with a brush, blended out the edges, and set it with a bit of translucent powder. Need a good red carpet beauty tip (you know, for the next time you're rubbing elbows with Lupita Nyong'o)? "When you're standing on the red carpet, a glossy lip doesn't always photograph well," says Lee. "A matte lip will always photograph the color in a true way."

Parting Gifts. After two hours of hair, makeup, and nails while listening to a "classic" music playlist by her husband Adam Shulman, Hathaway left for the Oscars around 3:30 p.m. But not without one of Lee's homemade miniature "panic" kits--which contained her lipstick, blotting papers, a palette with multiple concealer shades, a toothbrush, and a lavender-scented hand wipe. May we suggest an award for the most prepared clutch?
