Ann Curry's Surprising Trick for Hiding Dark Circles

By Alison Caporimo, Allure magazine

While backstage at the Heart Truth's Red Dress celebrity fashion show last week, I found myself most star-struck by the presence of the Today show's Ann Curry. Move aside, Denise Richards and Dita Von Teese. Here is a woman who broadcasts from Afghanistan on Monday, reports from a rally in Italy on Tuesday, and is spotted at the "running of the bulls" in Spain on Wednesday-only to end up looking bright-eyed and beautiful within the confines of your television screen on Thursday's 6 a.m. news.

So how does this real-life Carmen San Diego emerge unscathed from her countless layovers and ungodly call times? One simple beauty trick-redirection. For Curry, it comes in the form of lipstick: "Red, that's my go-to beauty fix," she explained (citing all of Bobbi Brown's rouge shades mixed with a MAC lip liner in Mahogany as her personal color palette). "Sometimes I'll come back from an assignment really exhausted and I'll have to turn around after three or four hours of sleep and be on TV. That's when I pick up the red lipstick. It hides the dark circles-by making people look at your lips."

That got me thinking about makeup and the myriad ways one can nudge someone's gaze to particular parts of the face. I have a friend who resorted to smokey eyes, even for morning makeup in the office, if she had a pimple. Redirection! Or as she put it, "No one will notice a zit if they are busy staring at your eyes." While I think of her example as an extreme case (heavy daytime makeup makes me cringe), she does have a point about makeup creating a diversion.

Do you think that beauty products can make up for your flaws-or that overcompensating draws more attention?
