Best and Worst Looks for Curvy Girls and Why Thinner Doesn't Equal Prettier

I'm a "curvy" girl, AKA I've got some junk in the trunk. I happen to love my body and only obsess over the five or so pounds I fluctuate between when jumping around in a dressing room trying to pull on a tight pair of jeans.

I've always been under the impression that being pin thin does not equate beauty. I mean, sure Jennifer Hudson, one of my favorite African American beauties, has jaws dropping around the world thanks to her 80-pound weight loss, but is it because she actually looks prettier?

I think the key to looking good as a "bigger" girl is all about how you carry yourself and dress and I have found evidence for this in the Best and Worst Celebrity Looks for Curvy Girls photo gallery, which illustrates that no matter your size, you can either choose to enhance your curves or hide them with frumpy fashion and styling.

Here's some of the evidence:

Jennifer Hudson: Worst

This old shot of Hudson proves that you must pick the right trends for you. Big billowing shapes, droopy waistlines and pouchy puckered crotches are a challenge even for non-curvy types. They are a car-wreck for the curve-blessed. Hudson should have stuck with clothing that creates, not erases, a womanly shape. She gets extra credit, though, for the chic straight hairstyle and carmel highlights.

Queen Latifah: Best

Be glamorous. The Queen knows better than just about anybody that curves are sexy. Be confident, like Latifah, and employ the latest trends that are right for you. Her sexy tousled hair and gorgeous jewel-toned gown make her the belle of the ball.

Emme: Worst

Beware The Frump. Looking frumpy is the main danger zone for curvy women. While this hairstyle might have worked with a more feminine or dressy frock (though we doubt it), it looks like she ran out of time to get ready. Make sure you have a great fuss-free haircut.

Jordin Sparks: Best

Be strategic. Use the details in clothing to keep the eye where you want it. The studs in Jordin Sparks' top act like a frame telling the eye exactly where to look: at that killer smile! A pop of color in the earrings emphasizes the point.

Mo'Nique: Worst

The rules still apply. There's nothing about being curvy that means you should ignore the beauty basics for your face shape, eye color, hair type, skin type, etc. If you have a round face, a super-tight updo with a tall skinny column on top is not going to be flattering. This look is workable on very few heads. Stick with styles that are right for your type.

America Ferrera: Best

Do channel the goddesses. Curves equal sexy. And quintessential sex kittens like Brigitte Bardot, Ursula Andress, and Raquel Welch knew a thing or two about creating a look. Follow their cue, as America Ferrera does here with this sexy half updo hairstyle.
