Black lipstick, three ways

Fans of black nail polish: this fall, you're about to find out just how dark your dark side is.

YSL, M.A.C., and Lancome are all rolling out their own limited-edition, super-dark shades. But this time, they're for lips.

I have but two pieces of advice: Make sure every square inch of you is impeccably groomed and toned down. Otherwise the lip color will look like a Marilyn Manson mess. Consider yourself warned. Good luck!

Does this trend sound all too familiar? Jessica Matlin takes us back to the dark lipstick days of Brenda Walsh with What 90210 Taught Us About Beauty.

For the Bold: M.A.C.'s Cult of Cherry Collection. Pick any of the dark cherry lip colors for a deep pout that's too sweet to be goth. (My fave: Mattene Lipstick in Kirsch, a blackened cranberry.) Check out the collection here.

For the Brave: Yves Saint Laurent Gloss in Pur Black. One slick, and your lips turn the color of a black grape popsicle. Two slicks, and things start to get serious. It's the color Stefano Pilati used in the YSL show. Intense.

For the Brilliant: Lancome Color Fever Gloss in Piha Black . This gloss has less pigment and more sparkle than you'd expect. Think of it as an accessory that only a precious few can get their hands on--it will be sold as a set with Piha Red Color Fever Lipstick (which also looks killer when layered with the black). It hits Bloomingdale's in New York City in November. Call 212. 705. 2886 to get on the list.

Writing this, I remember the girl in high school who was so mercilessly taunted for wearing Manic Panic's matte black lipstick. Lets hope she feels good about this trend. I do.
