Blinged to the Bone! When it comes to your fashion jewelry, does size really matter?

I love wearing the Mustard Yellow Bone Necklace set with my black and white stripe cotton tee from J. Crew. Although wearing red accessories with black and white has become somewhat of a fashion staple these days I love the burst of color the yellow adds to a plain tee and also the added drama that a chunky piece adds to any outfit.

But how big is too big? I have recently been hearing a lot of talk that women with small bone structures should not wear large accessories. I tend to notice that the small women that I know stick to this rule very well with only one or two who love all types of flashy jewelry so much that size does not matter to them.

Personally speaking I do not think you need to follow a bone structure rule to wear statement fashion jewelry. Most runway models are usually rail thin and they can still pull off monster-sized accessories with ease. Now of course, if you are a petite person I wouldn't recommend wearing so many oversized accessories at once that you look like a walking game board. Your jewelry shouldn't wear you. You should wear it. But on any size person the key to pulling off a bold piece of jewelry is knowing how to contrast it with the right outfit.

If you go with a piece like our Turqouise and Matted Gold Cluster necklace for example, you can pair it up with an outfit that has simple, clean lines so the necklace becomes the focal point but does not overpower the outfit. The earrings you choose to wear with a necklace can also be the big difference between trendy and tacky when it comes to fashion necklaces. Usually the more dramatic the necklace the more understated the earrings for me. The reverse is also true most times. A long dramatic earring like the Fallen Leaves earring work best with either a simple long necklace or no necklace at all if you have a very short neck.

Large, dramatic bracelets also seem to be unpopular with many small-boned women. In their defense I could probably see why, since many women with tiny wrists have a hard time with large bracelets falling off. However, for the others that don't, there is still some reservation that stacking large bracelets look ridiculous on them. Bracelets, however I think are one of the best pieces of jewelry to play with. You can stack different sizes, colors and shapes to create your own personalized look. You can make it as dramatic or as simple as you wish. If you have small wrists and are afraid of your arm looking like the Michelin Man's, check out the Blocked Bone Bangles and the Ivory Pretzel Cuff from our collection!
