Brittany Murphy's Clothes Go Up for Auction

Best known for her breakthrough role as Alicia Silverstone's awkward friend in "Clueless" and as the voice of Luanne in the animated TV show "King of the Hill," actress Brittany Murphy has reached Marilyn Monroe status in the pop culture world. This weekend, items from her estate -- clothes, shoes, and jewelry -- are going up for auction alongside the iconic "Superman" cape and blue-knit leotard, the leopard-print outfit that Maureen O'Sullivan wore in "Tarzan," and a strappy brown cocktail dress worn by Marilyn Monroe.

Michael Doyle, consignment director for Julien's Auctions, told Yahoo! Shine that he spent about two years working with Murphy's mother, Sharon Murphy, to decide which items to sell. Online bidders can view the 500 or so pieces at the Julien's Auctions site; the starting prices for each lot range from $50 to $500.

While no clothes from "Clueless" will be on the auction block, Doyle said that some items from "Just Married," in which she stared with her then-boyfriend, Ashton Kutcher, are available, along with jewelry, shoes, and "more couture and fashion items" from red-carpet events and magazine shoots. A sleeveless white dress by Versus, which Murphy wore to the 2005 uBid Hurricane Relief Auction, is in one lot, along with the black Versace outfit she wore to a Dom Perignon launch party in 2006. Another is made up of several vintage coats and Christian Louboutin heels.

"All the items are being consigned directly by her estate, by her mother," he told Yahoo! Shine on Thursday. "So all of the funds raised are going to her."

The actress was just 32 when she died of complications from pneumonia and "multiple drug intoxication" from a combination of cold medications in December 2009. Her husband, 39-year-old producer and writer Dimon Monjack, died just five months later.

"Everybody has difficult years," Murphy once said. "But a lot of times the difficult years end up being the greatest years of your whole entire life, if you survive them."

The renewed interest in Murphy-related memorabilia may be because her last project -- the psychological thriller "Something Wicked" -- is set to finally be released later this year. It was filmed in 2009, just a few months before she died.
