She says that women sometimes skip the base coat when going for dark polish because they figure the base coat is meant to keep their nails from staining and if they don't care about that, then why bother? But while, yes, base coat does help prevent the color from soaking into your nail and creating hardcore stains, it does something else that's crucial for dark colors: It grabs onto the pigment. And since the pigments in dark nail polish are so heavy, this means that you'll get fewer chips. So using base coat for dark colors is key for more reasons than you thought.
