Cheap Tricks: Ways to Save On Your Hair

Even beauty editors hate seeing our hard earned money go down the salon drain. Which is why we're keeping these tips from "Cheap Tricks" in Allure's June issue near to our hearts-and hair. Read and learn.

Free your bangs. Most stylists will trim your bangs gratis between appointments-which means extra money (and cute hair) for you.

Get glazed. A clear glaze at the salon will help seal in your color and prolong its life by at least two extra weeks-which means fewer pricey touch-ups. (To save even more, pick-up an at-home version. Louis Licari, who owns salons in New York City and Beverly Hills, likes Clairol Natural Instincts Loving Care.)

Minimize highlights. Ask your colorist to preserve more of your natural color rather than introducing a completely new shade. That way, your roots will look less obvious when they grow out, and you can go longer between visits.

Pamper your hair. A deep conditioning treatment not only repairs damaged strands, but it can also preserve your color, especially for brunettes and redheads. And try shampoos and conditioners formulated for color-treated hair; they really do extend the life of your color. Plus, some also include UV-filters, which can prevent sun damage and fading.
