Common Makeup Blunders

We all know that the key to looking great is applying your cosmetics so that it compliments your face and eyes. All too often I see women that overdue their makeup for one reason or another with excessive eye makeup and/or foundation that does not match their skin tone or skin type for that matter.

Do you make these common makeup mistakes?

Mascara Clumps - I am sure you are all familiar with clumpy mascara. It hangs on to the eyelashes all bunched up instead of coating each individual eye lash like it should. Here are some tips for a smooth application of mascara.

  • Do not brush your applicator in and out the tube, this only dries out the mascara by pushing air into the tube.

  • The proper way to apply mascara to the wand is by wiggling the wand inside the tube

  • Once you have applied your mascara, and before it dries, comb through your lashes with an eyelash comb or toothbrush to evenly distribute the mascara and remove any excess or clumps.

Eyebrows - to many times women draw in their eyebrows that are quite stark. If you have full, lush brows, then it is not necessary to add any color. All that is needed is shaping and tweezing to remove any stray hairs, then apply a bit of brow gel. For those with sparse brows, use an angled brush and apply brow powder along the natural line of the brow extending it to the edge of the eye.

Lip Liner and lipstick - dark lip liner against a light lipstick must have been popular at one time as I have seen this quite a bit. Your lip liner should be close to the natural color of your lips. If you prefer lip liners then fill in your whole lips with the liner and apply a clear gloss, not a lighter lipstick.

Too often many think that applying a liner beyond the lip line will make your lips appear fuller. Unfortunately this is not true. To get the appearance of fuller lips, only outline the border of the lips and then color and apply a lip plumping product. Did you know that applying a dab of clear lip gloss on the center of the lower lip will reflect light and will make your lips appear fuller?

Foundation - most women use foundation to cover up some imperfection in the complexion, however suffocating your skin with a heavy foundation or powder only draws more attention to the imperfections. For fine lines and wrinkles, mix in a moisturizer with your foundation this will prevent the foundation from filling in the lines and making them appear more prominent. Addtionally, try a filler to fill in fine lines and wrinkles. For a scarred complexion from acne or to cover blemishes, consider a mineral makeup and apply light layers as needed to perfect the coverage.

Another telltale sign of the overuse of foundation is a noticeable line where the foundation ends, such as on the jaw line. Always choose a foundation that is the right shade for your complexion and the right type for your skin type. Test your foundation in a natural light and consider a makeup sponge for easy application and blending.

Above are just a few of the makeup blunders that we see everyday. Other blunders are improper blush applications, improper eyeliner applications, etc. How many makeup blunders can you think of?

Personal note: I realize that we are all individuals and cosmetics and the application thereof are an expression of individual styles, however I do believe that the proper application of cosmetics will enhance your apperance instead of being a distraction.
