Diary of a Mad Fashionista, A Play by Elisa DeCarlo

Got an invitation to a play called "Diary of a Mad Fashionista" - sounds like my kind of play! Unfortunately, I wasn't free, so Kirk, our Men's editor, went to check it out for me. Here's his take and a quick Q&A with star and writer Elisa DeCarlo:

"Diary of a Mad Fashionista" gets TETU -- two enthusiastic thumbs up! I enjoyed the blend of fashion history with the contemporary referencing of celebrity, marketing and branding of clothing as well as people. I laughed out loud. Good stuff!

Kirk: What is your fashion background?
Elisa: I have been obsessed with clothing since I was a young teenager and I started watching old movies...I loved the clothing in the old movies, especially the Technicolor musicals from the 1940s. I wanted to look like those ladies in all the elegant draping and the furs and just the lavishness of it all. Later, as an adult, I was able to find those kinds of clothes in thrift store. To me, clothes are costumes.

Kirk: What inspired you to write your play?
Elisa: It's based upon my blog, Diary of A Mad Fashionista. The character in the blog's life is so much more interesting than mine. She's got all the money in the world and she has no conscience.

Kirk: What advice would you give to someone following in your footsteps?
Elisa: Don't listen to people who say no. Start very very small. Don't spend too much money. The main thing is you have to believe in yourself.

Kirk: Who are your style icons?
Elisa: Jane Russell, Joan Crawford, Helen Mirren. I love the 40s era.

If you were going to write a play about your personal style, what would you call it?

- Kirk
