At the beginning of every awards season, we always find ourselves waiting with bated breath to see the standout fashion moments that will rise to the surface - will it be a season full of statement-making fashion choices, or will this year's trend shift toward safe bets?

The lovely Emma Watson answered our question last night the second she stepped onto the carpet, proving that Hollywood still likes to take a risk. All eyes were on the British beauty as she made her debut in a vibrant red Dior Haute Couture floor-length gown paired with black cropped trousers. The completely backless gown, accented with short sleeves and a belted waist, was one of the most buzzed-about looks of the night.

"I just thought it was really fun because it had trousers," she told InStyle as to why she chose the look. "I felt very easy, very comfortable in it, and I think that's really important, and it felt kind of original. It felt a bit different." Another bonus to the outfit? Storage compartments! "It has pockets," she told us.

Watson completed her demure look with a side-swept updo, a pair of Roger Vivier strappy heels, and plenty of jewels, including one Dior "Mise en Dior" pearl earring on her left lobe.

Pants on the red carpet? Definitely not something we see a lot of. (But we're certainly glad we did last night.) Looks like Hollywood is back to taking chances.
