Fall's Fab Five: Top Trends for 2011

By GalTime Shopping ExpertAmy Salinger

Fall 2011 is just around the corner, and that can only mean one thing: It is time to reinvent yourself and make way for the best trends of the season! Here are five of my favorites:

1.) The Female Tuxedo: This is a trend that loves to make a comeback. It is sexy, sophisticated, and makes any woman an instant power player (with a little vixen flare!). As with any tailored piece, fit is key. Purchase a cheaply made jacket or pair of pants and you will look exactly that…cheap. This doesn't mean you need to empty your entire piggy bank. Pick either the jacket or the pants to save a few dollars, or opt for a "middle of the road" price on an entire suit. Think of it as an investment. A great, tailored tuxedo will never go out of style and you can wear each piece over and over, many different ways. The female tuxedo is high on the "cost per wear" meter!

2.) 60s Mod: Designers always tell me that they never look backward, only forward, but this next trend proves them very, very wrong. 60's mod is back (yet again), and it's time to get the psychedelic party started! Mod essentially means lots of color, graphic, bold prints, and boxy silhouettes. The younger you are, the more you can brand yourself funky with this fun trend. If you're a more mature gal, choose a mod top or accessory to "get the look" without going overboard. Opting for just one piece still shows that you're "in the know."

3.) Kooky Prints: If your personality is bold and vocal, this is the perfect way to represent your style brand. Kooky, mixed up prints are an easy way to get someone's attention, but it's important to manage this trend correctly. There's a fine line between silly and stylish! Always remember your destination. Avoid overwhelming, head-to-toe prints at work. Leave the complete look for the weekend, and punch up your work wardrobe with a printed top or belt. You'll be the talk of the office, but in a stylish and positive way!

4.) Fur: This season, fur isn't limited to jackets, vests, and earmuffs…it will be found on "indoor" pieces, too! It truly is a bit over the top, but heck, isn't that what great fashion is sometimes about? This can be a pretty expensive trend if you don't go for "faux." Just be sure to choose a very good faux fur as an alternative. (Please, I beg of you, be careful in your choice!) If you question the quality at all, don't buy it. Successful style may sometimes be "faux," but it never has to look cheap.

5.) Longer Skirts: A trendy style that almost any gal can latch onto is the longer skirt. Keep them flowing and fun, and avoid stiff materials. The shorter you are, the more difficult they are to wear. To pull of the look, any garments on top should hit at your waist. (Proportions can be your best friend, or your worst enemy! ) This style is great for the girl who is a bohemian at heart. The best part is that a longer skirt can be worn 7-days a week, at work, or on the weekend. (When styled appropriately, of course!)

A trendy fall, a trendy (re-branded) you. You may not fall in love with every single "look" I've listed, so pick and choose what works best for your style and personality. Clean out your closet, and see what current trends are lurking in the depths of your wardrobe. Buy what you need. Use what you have! And remember: There are always less expensive options to fit any budget.

Did we forget something? Add to the list of what you're looking forward to in fashion this fall!
