Fashion and beauty rules when you’re 30

Yesterday I turned 30. I had a really awesome birthday, but before heading out to celebrate last night, I took a good long look in the mirror a la Molly Ringwald in "Sixteen Candles" to see if I looked any older. No noticeable transformations in the last 24 hours. Whew! But still, everyone kept making a big deal about it. "Oh my gosh, you're 30!" they said. Or "Wow! I can't believe you're 30!" Or "You're a real woman now!" (Isn't that what people say when you first get your period?! Sheesh.) Also, for reference: Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys, Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera, and Jessica Simpson are all 30, and they're not exactly grandmas.

While it really shouldn't be a big deal, entering a new decade of my life made me think about age appropriateness. At 30 you're "supposed to" be responsible. You're "supposed to" start settling down and thinking about marriage and a family. And you're "not supposed to" wear certain things anymore (short shorts, I'm looking at you). Clearly there are exceptions, and to be perfectly honest, I've never been one to blindly follow or adhere to any type of rules or societal norms. But as I've begun to spring clean my closet I'm wondering which items I should get rid of. Are there any garments I should now be stocking up on now that I'm "a real woman"? And on a similar note, do I need to buy more anti-wrinkle cream? Lay off the colorful eyeliner? Essentially, must I present myself differently now that I am 30.

I know I'm the resident fashion and beauty authority on Shine, but I'm turning to you ladies for some wisdom in this area. Should I heed the words of Aaliyah: "age ain't nothin' but a number?" Or are there certain fashion and beauty rules a 30-year-old woman should follow? Lend some advice and share your aging tips in the comments section below.
