So now that season three of Girls has come to an end, let's take a look back at some of the most memorable hairstyles, shall we? We chatted with Sherry Heart, head hair designer for the show, and got some fun scoop!

Glamour: How do you come up with hairstyles for the cast? Is there a deeper conversation that happens, or do you just have fun with it?

Sherry Heart: There are quite a few elements involved when creating a character's hairstyle for a particular episode. Sometimes, I get requests from Lena [Dunham] or the director. I also take into account the character's wardrobe, the scene's action, and the weather if we're shooting outside. Sometimes an actor will come to me with a particular idea about how her character should look. Thankfully, it's never all of these at once--that would be too many cooks in the kitchen!

Each character clearly has her own personality on the show. Talk about how that affects the hairstyle choices you make for each character.

SH: For every episode, I keep track of what's going on in each character's life. When season three began, we found out Hannah was now consumed with her writing and didn't have time to futz with her hair. She even cut her hair off in the last episode as a kind of OCD fallout. So, following that story line, I kept her hair simple. The most I did to her hair was throw a Scunci barrette in her bangs. Scunci makes really cute barrettes, and I thought they looked like the sort of thing Hannah would choose for herself.

SH: I think the character Marnie often wants to look more polished than the other girls as part of her effort to appear as if her life is well put-together despite the many ways in which it is falling apart. So I did her hair down and wavy-curly.

SH:
Jessa has always been a free spirit, and I make sure her hair reflects that. Jessa is an artist and has an experimental personality, so I try new and unusual styles on her as if she's searching for new ways to express herself. I think Shoshanna looks to fashion magazines for her hair inspiration. So to find inspiration for her hairstyles, my team and I also look at fashion magazines for ideas. This season, her character became focused on school and we simplified her hairdos just like a girl with such a busy schedule might choose to do.

Glamour: What was your favorite hairstyle of season three? Favorite hairstyle of the series?

SH: It has to be a tie between Jessa and Shoshanna at Hannah's birthday party in episode three, "She said OK". Both hairdos were a lot of fun to create.

Glamour: Do the girls have any quirks when it comes to their hair?

SH: The girls are a dream cast to work with and are always open to ideas from me and from my team. Likewise, I'm also open to the ideas that they bring to me. I like having their input, and together, I think we come up with some great hair.

Glamour: How do you come up with Shoshanna's quirky looks? Where do you find inspiration when creating them?

SH: Shoshanna is definitely the quirky one of the four. She is animated in speech as well as in her wardrobe, and my team and I take all of this into account when coming up with her hairstyles. Like I said before, we take inspiration from magazines like we think her character would, and we try to give her hairstyles that she could create on herself. I think the end result is that she comes across as a very original girl who doesn't have to try real hard to be original.

Glamour: What are your favorite products to use on set?

SH: I absolutely love (and use every day) Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo Spray. It mops up any grease in hair (which is essential in TV and filmmaking) and adds texture. I have also fallen in love with Scunci Knotted Ponytailers. Because they're made of fabric, they don't tear hair as you pull them out. And I regularly use Bed Head Manipulator for finishing hair and getting a little texture into the style.

Glamour:
Who inspires you?

SH:
I am a fan of the ladies who do vintage extremely well. Dita Von Teese is a favorite of mine. Her hair is perfectly coiffed in 1940s style, and her skin looks like it's untouched and has never seen the sun. I think her beauty secrets would be the most valuable to know. Love her!
