(Getty)Back in 2007, Opa-locka, a town located in Miami-Dade County in Florida, was one of the first to pass a local ordinance banning low-riding, saggy pants on men--a law that some people felt was unfairly targeting specific groups of people, especially those interested in hip-hop music and culture. Now, in Opa-locka, it's illegal for women to wear any pants that expose any underwear or undergarments in public. Accidentally bend over to reach something on a low shelf at at supermarket and your undies peek out over your jeans? That'll be a $500 fine, ma'am.

And just in case this all sounds like one big joke--after all, don't law enforcement officers have anything better to do than to walk around arresting people for not wearing high-waisted trousers?--rest assured it's for real. So far in 2013, the local government has issued 72 people tickets for wearing their pants too low.

"This thing started in Opa-locka and it spread all over the world," local commissioner Timothy Holmes, who sponsored the bill in 2007, said. "They can try to stop it if they want to, but I don't think it would ever happen. I never wanted to try to put somebody's child in jail, even though, in my opinion, some of them need to go to jail with their pants down like that."

What do you think? Do people really deserve jail time for wearing their pants low? If you're a woman living in Opa-locka, do you have to only buy high-waisted pants from now on, for fear of being fined $500? Sound off in the comments; we want to know what you think!
