Hair Dare: Heat Styling Ban (With Pictures, Eep!)

I've got a huge confession to make. Before this dare, I literally could not remember what my natural hair looked like. So when we decided to put a heat styling ban on the entire office, I had no idea what to expect.

I've gone without heat before (I just had to try it after seeing these celebrities style their hair without a blow dryer), but that was nothing compared to how this dare turned out. Check out some of the most dramatic differences below (kudos to all of the brave women in our office who volunteered to take pictures of themselves!):

Here's what we did: Day 1, style as normal. Day 2, no heat, no products, nothing (cue terrifying horror-movie music). Day 3, still no heat styling but we could use whatever products we wanted (cue slightly-less-terrifying horror-movie music).

Susan Day 1: Heat Styling

This is my favorite way to wear my hair, but it takes about 45 minutes to do. In the shower, I used Lea Journo Shampoo and Conditioner, $28 each. Then, after towel drying my hair, I applied MoroccanOil Oil Treatment, $23.95 to the ends of my hair to keep it smooth and protect it. I then blew out my hair until it was almost dry using just my fingers, then I sectioned it into three sections. With a round brush, I smoothed the hair out and tried to add wave to my hair by twisting the round brush like a spiral curl, but it didn't really work (never does). Last, I blew the front hair (long bangs) forward and rolled them into the brush.

Susan Day 2: No products, no styling

My hair is really thick and wavy/curly (depending on the day). Today, I semi-cheated by using Lea Journo Parfait Intense Hydrating Masque, $45 because that extra kick of hydration would help keep the 'fro from getting too big. I NEVER go without using some sort of hair product so I was really nervous and thought this would be a good proactive step.

Susan Day 3: Products, but still no heat

This is my hair without heat styling, but with mega-mounds of product. I basically towel-dried my hair, then applied Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum, $22 to it to keep the frizz at bay. After just a few minutes, I applied Garnier Fructis Style Wonder Waves Mousse, $6.49 to boost the natural waves, and then finished off the hairstyle with Lea Journo La Forme Styling Lotion, $28 because it makes the waves feel soft instead of crunchy and it smells nice.

Molly Day 1: Heat Styling

I never enjoy blow drying my hair, but I do like the results and it lasts longer than when I let it go wavy, therefore I'm typically a slave to heat styling. The night before this photo was taken, I washed my hair with Onesta Hydrating Shampoo and Onesta Super Conditioner, $23 each, used some MoroccanOil Oil Treatment, $23.95 and blew it dry. The next morning, I brushed it and used a little L'Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray, $13.99 to secure my go-to 'do.

Molly Day 2: No products, no styling

I mentioned that I hate blow drying, so I had no qualms about partaking in this natural hair challenge. I washed my hair the night before with the same shampoo and conditioner and let it air dry. Then, in the morning, I did nothing to it. It was pretty wavy and looked just OK.

Molly Day 3: Products, but still no heat

For this look, I used AG Hair Cosmetics dv8 Texture Spray, $20 and it made my waves more defined and gave me a hippie-meets-hipster 'do that I would def rock again when I want a departure from my usual straight, sleek hairstyle.
