Hair Help: 3 Tricks to Fixing Your Color

Even though all the at-home hair color advances make it less complicated to dye your locks at home, mistakes still happen. For example, you wanted a chocolate brown shade but what you got is an almost-black one. First, keep in mind that hair looks a lot darker when it's wet, so don't panic when you initially step out of the shower. If you're still shocked once your hair is completely dry, try one of these solutions.

Hair-Color Remover

Pick up a box of Color Oops hair-color remover. It helps lift semi-permanent and permanent dye from your strands.

Hot Oil Treatment

Use a hot oil treatment like Alberto VO5 Hot Oil Weekly Intense Conditioning Treatment. "Oil treatments can lift out some of the excess pigment left over from the initial coloring," says Nexxus color director Sharon Dorram-Krause. "Apply the oil treatment on your hair for 15 minutes and cover your head with a shower cap since heat intensifies the process." Once you wash it out, your color should be slightly lighter.

Highlights

Adding a few light pieces around your face can really brighten up your whole look. "The highlights should be two to three shades lighter than your hair color," says Dorram-Krause. Note: It's best to see a professional for this since the last thing you want to do is create an even bigger problem.
