Hair Ideas: The 6 Best Looks from New York Fashion Week!

By Heather Muir, Allure magazine

On days when you're in the mood to do a little something different with your hair, let these looks (hot off the spring 2011 runway!) inspire you. They're sparking a lot of story ideas all over our office...

Rodarte: The show's '70s-inspired swoop-pinned with a gold, jeweled clip-made the school-girl look sexy all over again. Hairstylist Odile Gilbert sprayed the models' roots with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray before blow-drying, then created a deep side part and pinned the front section back with one of several different Rodarte-designed clips. We're thinking of sporting it in the office or on an afternoon date.

Anna Sui: Ok, so you might look a little odd walking down the street with a floral crown on your head. But we still love the romantic vibe of this loosely waved look, above, created by hairstylist Garren. For everyday, skip the halo of flowers (or sub in a simple floral headband instead) and simply copy the soft waves in four easy steps. (1) Run styling cream through dry hair. (2) Set the hair in a few braids. (3) Undo the braids after a half hour or so. (4) Shake out the hair and make a center part. Done!

Proenza Schouler: This beautiful, Hitchcock-inspired twist done by hairstylist Paul Hanlon is chic for the office, or a date. Spritz a texturizing spray on wet hair and dry with a diffuser for fullness. Then loosely gather and tuck the top half of the hair into a French twist at the nape of the neck, leaving a few long layers to hang.

Marc Jacobs: A mix of brushed-out curls and big flowers, this look is loud and statement-making (but did we expect anything else?). Hairstylist Guido pin-curled the models' hair for a '30s-esque effect. Then he finished the look with a side part and a little decoration-clipping in rust and gold super-sized flowers.

Carolina Herrera: Forget the basic ponytail. This Asian-influenced look was adorned with barrettes wrapped in human hair! "I cut the ends of the barrettes to make them look like obi sashes," hairstylist Orlando Pita told us. He then styled the hair by pulling it back into a straight ponytail and misting on Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray for a glossy sheen.

Jason Wu: This business in front, party in the back look is growing on us. The next time we're feeling adventurous, we're going to attempt the Pocahontas-like braided ribbon look. (Hairstylist Odile Gilbert was inspired with a ribbon taken straight from Wu's collection.) She blow-dryed the hair with a Mason Pearson brush to smooth flyaways and pulled it back into a low ponytail. After dividing the hair into four sections, she tied a long piece of fabric at the top of each section and intertwined it while braiding each. To finish, she collected all the braids and used the excess ribbon to tie the hair into a bow, creating a big loop.
