How to Go Blonde

Our senior editor, Karen Palmer, was ready to become a blonde (see the results in our video). We wanted to find out what's really involved in making the drastic color change, from the stylist consultation to how long the process takes, so we went to colorist Victoria Hunter of Whittemore House salon in New York learn about the process. Yes, it took four hours, but the results were well worth it. If you're looking to take the plunge too, be sure to keep these tips in mind.

1. Communicate
One of the most important parts of the process is the consultation with your colorist. Bring in photographs of your desired color - your idea of strawberry blonde might not be the colorist's idea of strawberry blonde.

2. Schedule Plenty of Time
Like your whole day. Going from brunette to blonde involves stripping your natural hair color first and is about a 4-5 hour process.

3. Don't Go Too Blonde
If you go too light, it will take the color right out of your face. Try a warm honey shade.

4. Ask For a Few Layers of Color
The more dimension in your hair color, the more natural it will look. Ask your colorist to use a few shades.

5. Save Your Eyebrows for Last
Do your hair color first because you don't know how you'll really look with the new color until you're done.
