How To Wear A Fall Hat Now

By Jenny Feldman,Glamour magazine

Tracey already dished about the most recent inductees into the "headwear hall of fame" but even if you're not yet at Aretha Franklin's level of hat prowess (seriously-who is?) you're probably curious about how to pull off one of fall's key accessories. Luckily, we've got some advice from fashion designer Abigail Lorick and rising young milliner Gigi Burris, who collaborated together on Lorick's recent fashion week presentation.

Slaves to Fashion: What three hat styles should every girl have in her wardrobe?

Gigi Burris:
An oversize beret, a feathery evening topper for special occasions and something with a veil for mysterious glamour.
Abigail Lorick
: A mink pill box hat, a baseball hat and a big cashmere hat for the winter.

STF: What's the freshest hat trend we're seeing for next season?

GB:
The re-invented turban! And wide '70s-style brimmed hats.

STF: What's the one hat a girl should own by the time she turns 30, aside from a winter snow hat?

AL: A cotton beach hat!

STF: Any rules about hats and face shape and styles that flatter certain faces?

GB:
It's important to wear a style that you feel confident in-typically that will be one that suits your face. For a rounder shaped face, experiment with a bit of a higher crown to elongate your proportions. Also, color is key. Find a hat in a color that flatters your skin tone and eyes.
AL: Big hats look best with the hair tucked up inside or with a side low bun. Tall beanies are great for elongating the face and giving a leaner proportion to your outfit.

STF: Is it acceptable to keep a hat on indoors or no? What are the etiquette rules these days?

GB:
I believe it to be appropriate to keep a hat on indoors if it's essential to your ensemble-and obviously depending on the severity of your hat hair!
AL:
For women they say it is acceptable to wear hats indoors, but my personal rule is if the brim reaches off your forehead, leave it at the door. If there's not a brim then the hat is more of a head piece and is acceptable in all doors and occasions.

STF: What are some unexpected outfits to make with hats?

AL:
A solid colored baseball cap with a long knit dress and soft sandals.

Thank you, Gigi and Abigail! Ladies, your turn! How are you wearing a hat this season? Have you tried a turban yet? What about a baseball cap with a dress? Do you like to take risks with hats? Which styles flatter your face the best?
