How Young is Too Young for Makeup?

At 12, I was swiping bright green eye shadow across my eyelids and battling with my mother over whether or not I could shave my legs. Turns out, that practically makes me a late bloomer.

According to Experian Market Research, 43 percent of six to nine-year-olds use lipstick or lip gloss and 38 percent use hairstyling products. This comes as little surprise to Allure beauty news editor Heather Muir. "My sister teaches in an elementary school where kindergarteners wear lip gloss and mascara," she says. "I think it's insane!" She's not alone.

"Nine or younger is too young to even be worrying about making up your face," says Allure beauty editor Angelique Serrano. "I wasn't allowed to wear makeup until I was 16 years old. At 13, I was allowed to wear lip gloss and clear-only clear-mascara."
