Is Photo-Fatting Fun--Or Mean?

When the App Store started selling FatBooth, an application that shows you exactly what you'd look like as a morbidly obese version of yourself, the media went nuts. Hoda and Kathie Lee tried it out on the Today show, and newspapers even "supersized" Sarah Jessica Parker and George Clooney.

So we decided to give it a go at the Allure offices, with my co-workers cajoling me into being the guinea pig. We used an iPhone to snap a photo of me and waited a minute while a hamburger icon danced onscreen. When we got the puffed-up photo, the responses were actually more interesting than the picture itself. Half of the women in the room lined up to try it next and the other half ran away in fear.

One woman said she'd worry about somebody's anorexic sister getting hold of this app; another said it would be great to use as diet motivation, especially printed out and taped to the fridge. Some people shrieked and some people laughed.

So what do you think about the trend of "supersizing" your photo? Is it mean fat-bashing or good for a harmless laugh? Is it motivational or unhealthy? Weigh in (sorry, had to do it) in the comments.
