Is This Marc Jacobs Dress Really Worth $28,000?

Over the years, New York Fashion Week has morphed from an elite industry event showcasing the city's most acclaimed designers, to a massive street-style circus with runway shows that are live streamed around the world. But that doesn't mean the garments have become any more attainable for the average woman. In fact, one Marc Jacobs dress from the designer's fall 2014 collection is available by special order and may cost more than your annual salary.

Anyone wishing to purchase the Puffy Clouds Embroidery Dress (pictured at left) must be willing to shell out a whopping $28,000. (No, we didn't accidentally add an extra zero.) Here's the justification, according to The Cut: Each individual flower on this dress is made of organza and hand-filled with three meters of yarn to create a pillowy look. The flowers were then crafted into fabric, as commissioned by Marc Jacobs's design studio, and it took three people an entire week to make it. The fabric itself cost €8,000 (or $11,030) a meter, and was then made into this one-of-a-kind creation.

As of now, the dress will be loaned out to celebrities for appearances and fashion shoots before being retired to the Marc Jacobs archives at the end of the season. Thus, any mere mortal wishing to wear it must pay a fortune to have one made to order. Yahoo Shine reached out to Marc Jacobs for a statement about the pricey gown, but has not yet heard back.

The Puffy Clouds Embroidery Dress is not the only dress from the fall 2014 Marc Jacobs collection that will break the bank. Several other dresses with staggering price tags were recently available for pre-sale on the website Moda Operandi. The sequin wave embroidered scoop-neck and V-neck dresses cost $18,000 each, a sequin V-neck tunic costs $9,000, and a crinkle organza V-neck dress will set you back $4,800 (almost a bargain compared to the others).

Those dying to buy a dress that costs the same as a car need look no further than Valentino's spring collection available on Net-A-Porter. One embellished tulle gown rings in at an unsettling $25,000 (Act fast, there are only two left!), while an embellished neon satin gown is priced at $23,500 (with only one left, in that case), and an embroidered lace gown is a more modest $15,000 (just three of those left). Clearly, there are women out there willing to wear their paychecks on their sleeves.
