Is This Shirt Terrible or Tongue-in-Cheek?
We're all for novelty tees, and freedom of speech, and being provocative, but we have to admit we were shocked and a little offended by an Urban Outfitters tee that we saw a few friends tweeting about the other day.
The shirt that upset them (and us) so? It looks like this:
'Eat Less,' really? There may be an obesity epidemic in this country, but there are also tons of young, impressionable girls (and boys) - not to mention the pro-anorexia groups on the Internet - who'd take the shirt to heart to a dangerous extent. We know eating disorders are a major struggle for too many people out there, and we would hate for any of them to see and further internalize this message as they binge, purge, or starve quietly.
Normally we're big fans of UO (we wear their dresses to the office all the time), and honestly, the shirt was probably intended to be a cheeky commentary on fashion culture, but if that's the joke, it's falling flat for us.
The Huffington Post reported that the 'Eat Less' shirt has been removed from Urban Outfitters' online shop, but can still be found in stores. What do you think? Do we need to learn how to take a joke, or is this in poor taste? Would you buy one?
