1. When in doubt, wear black. "Most of the time, I dress depending on my mood," Kate says. "I just throw on whatever I feel like wearing at the time, which tends to come from the palette of black, grey or red. If I'm having an off day, I'll wear full black." It's a formula I've long stuck with myself, because it always looks put together, makes you feel your sveltest, and requires very little thought!

2. Don't overdo it on the accessories. "Wearing too many accessories at once can look very bad. I don't have any strict rules, but my husband does say not to wear a hat with glasses because I look as if I'm trying to wear a disguise," Kate confesses. Her one exception to the don't-pile-it-all-on rule? Jewelry. "I don't think you can ever have too much." Here, here, sister!

3. Find a vintage icon and emulate her. "Most women will have an era in fashion that they're drawn towards for inspiration," Kate says. "It's important to have some inspiration or a reference point when you're dressing." Love the polished look of the late 50s? Ask yourself, "Would Audrey Hepburn wear this?" each time you get dressed. Dig the mod 60s thing? Channel Twiggy with your every outfit.
