Ladies in Menswear: 6 Things to Borrow from Your Man

Hand in hand with my man!
Hand in hand with my man!

How cool would it be to get a new look or a new accessory...without even buying a thing?

Well, I can tell you it's very cool. It's called -- "Raid Your Husband's Closet!"

Warning: It may require some sweet talking. I had to play that card a couple of times. I don't think my husband has ever once had someone borrow his clothes. Luckily, I have four sisters so I'm pretty good at negotiating these things.

When you think you're up for it, here are 6 things you should be borrowing from the boys...

Leather belt

His Belt
The chunkier and bigger the better. (Here I am wearing Danny's belt.) If the belt is too big and long, trust me, that's preferable! No need to create new holes in the belt. Just tighten the belt, then wrap the belt around itself, and slip the end of the belt back through the belt loop to hold it secure.

Button-down shirt

His Shirt
Borrow a man's shirt! And skip the buttons. Instead wrap one side tight to your body, as if it were a robe. Then wrap the other side tight. Then secure with a belt. OR, just tie that bad boy in front and roll up the sleeves like I did here.

Soft, chunky scarf

His Scarf
Might as well add to this your scarf collection. It goes without saying that a scarf is a scarf, but a man's scarf, now that's just being cool. Plus, many men scarves have a masculine print and texture that looks chic in contrast to our pretty little feminine fabrics.

Super comfy, chunky sweater

His Chunky Comfy Sweater
Make good use of an old sweater (actually, just raid grandpa's closet, too.) Big and chunky, please. Roll up those over-sized sleeves and make sure not to wear bulky clothing under -- otherwise, you'll just look like a blob. I would go for a dress that lands just past your knees, but nothing longer. You don't want to big sweater to overwhelm your figure.

Manly hat

His Chipper Hat
I love men's hats on women. Size may be an issue here. But it's worth checking out (plus there are usually many more options for men's hats, which makes it a fun market to explore.) Try snap back caps for flexible adjustment or simply go to a tailor and see what he or she can do to size down!

Bow-tie and V-neck

His Bow-Tie and V-Neck
You gotta borrow a man's bowtie! It's OK to tie it kind of messy....like a girl did it (haha). Add his V-neck sweater and your look is complete. Again, big and loose is OK. Just belt it, tuck it, and roll up the sleeves. You can also turn the sweater into a tunic or a dress -- just wear tights or shorts under!
