To say Sunday night was Lupita Nyong'o's night is an understatement: She owned the red carpet in an ethereal Prada gown, took the award for best supporting actress, and made 90 percent of the room cry with an incredibly moving acceptance speech. And she had the beauty look to match: To accompany her gold-and-diamond Fred Leighton headband (swoon), makeup artist Nick Barose went for a makeup look that was truly fit for a star. "I was inspired by Elizabeth Taylor, if she were to go on vacation on an island. It's ethereal fresh. We wanted [Nyong'o] to look like modern-day movie star."

The Eyes. "We wanted the brows to be dramatic. I filled in the eyebrows using Chanel Crayon Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Noir Cendré to add a stronger shape, but it's still pretty soft. She's wearing liquid liner [Chanel Ligne Graphique De Chanel in Noir], but you don't even see it from a distance. For the eyes, I used a mix of shades from the Chanel Ombres Tracees Quadra Eyeshadow in Jardin Zen palette. It's a very simple eye. It's defined without being too dark."

The Lips. "The lip and cheek are bright orange, but they look subtle on Lupita."

The Extra Step. "Between the potential for crying and the rain, I wanted to make sure the look would last. The mascara and eyeliner are both waterproof, and the lipstick is long-wearing. I blotted her eyelids before applying the eye shadow to get rid of any oil, so I knew the shadow would stay in place."
